| Are there any NoVA lacrosse options for elementary school boys who have limited experience? My DS went to a week of lacrosse camp and had a blast and would like to trade in his soccer cleats for a lacrosse stick this fall. He's athletic and competitive and highly motivated, but has no game experience yet. |
| Try True Virginia. They have tryouts this week. |
| Most regions have a REC program, these are great beginner launch pads into travel. |

Where in Nova are you?
What grade is your son going into? Most rec leagues (BRYC, CYA, VYI) are mostly built are the traditional Spring season. However there are a lot of private quasi-travel team organizations that have a lot of different programs in the fall for kids just starting out. Madlax Scoopers / rippers programs The St James has a lot of clinic / camps There are others, let me know about location / age and I would be happy to provide more. |
I'm going to take a wild guess that your son went to Marymount last week. They generally run a pretty good camp. But, in addition to the St. James and ML's programs, Marymount typically runs some type of clinic/games. If you went to an MM camp, you'll get emails about it over the next few weeks or month. You can also try McLean Youth Lax rec team. Bucky tends or tries to run a bunch of camps/clinics/box lax games during the fall. Otherwise, I would suggest just looking around at the various other rec leagues. Some of them do stuff in the fall but not a ton. |
| Whatever you do, don't sign up for McLean Box. My new player did and it totally turned her off the sport. It was geared towards club players and no one coached. |
McLean box is great, if you already have a team, not good for developmental. |
Right--which is what this thread about. Not to be snarky but McLean Box really ruined lacrosse for one of my kids. Those kids were downright awful. We had no idea it would be this way or wouldn't have signed up for it. You don't send a bunch of 10 yr olds on a field without a coach. This isn't adult pickup league. |
Well it’s designed to be a pick up league though. I coach a u8 team there and they all love it. But I agree not the right environment for someone coming to learn the game. |
| Does anyone know anything about the new St. James boys league? |

DP. According to their website, the tryouts for my son's grad year were Monday and tomorrow (Wednesday). Obviously we already missed Monday. I can't tell if you have to be there both days or only one of the two? |
| Mon got canceled because of the pending storms |
Good to know--thank you!! |
Is this more for travel/club team players who practice 2x a week, but not for developmental? |
