DD will be gone for 12 days at a camp in the Poconos so it might be hot during the day and cool in the mornings and evenings, with some rainy days here and there. That means we have to pack for a variety of weather, but there will be no laundry. *Everything* is supposed to fit in one duffel, because DD will need to carry her own bag from the entrance to her bunk (parents not allowed in to help due to Covid safety precautions), but they said they understand if we need an additional bag for bed linens/towels.
It turns out her duffel is just too heavy and DD cannot carry it; I imagine we overpacked. My question is this: if you were packing for a 12 day camp (with all 15-16 year old campers who likely care about their appearance) would you pack enough clothing for 12 full days or would you pack for about 7-8 days and have DD wear things more than once? I packed 12 t-shirts, a sweatshirt, 2 long sleeve shirts and a Jean jacket, as well as one pair of jeans, 2 pairs leggings, 5 pairs of PJs, sneakers, sandals and crocs. Ugh. It’s way too heavy. Any advice would be much appreciated!! Thank you. |
^i also packed shorts, raincoat, etc. |
Too much. Also she won't care what she looks like at camp.
7-8 tshirts 1 long sleeve 2 sets of pajamas 1 sweatshirt 1 rain jacket 2 leggings (no jeans) 0 Jean jackets 1 sweatpants 12 underwear 4-5 shorts, athletic 3 bras Swim She will borrow clothes if she needs them. Subtract one from each category for what she wears into camp except underwear. |
Pack two smaller bags plus backpack and pillow. Easier to carry. Fewer PJs. Is there swimming? |
What about all the truly heavy stuff like toiletries, books, notebook, flashlight?
Also, if she is 15/16, she should probably be packing herself! It’s good practice. |
Poster above with list. Do you have the blue ikea square bags? I can usually get bedding and towels into one with pillows between handles on the outside. |
Heavy stuff in the backpack. |
OP is this her first time at camp? |
Get a rolling duffle bag. |
This is what our camp recommends and then they tuck under the bunk as a storage. Something like this: https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/904?originalProduct=126207&productId=1819867&attrValue_0=Sea%20Holly&sku=1000095972&pla1=0&qs=3155262&pcd=SUN10&gclid=CjwKCAjw5s6WBhA4EiwACGncZY-mANIbWfcw-1yI0QErxPBpmVla_8NkLjlo2JABPMZUJ0jmJsy04RoC3A4QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&SN=findtest_04&SS=A&SN2=floatsbtest_03&SS2=A |
I am sitting at a camp right now (girl/Boy Scout
) there is no need to pack linens or clothes for every single day. Rain gear is absolutely essential (pants included). Two beach towels. 5-6 shirts, 5 shorts, 3 sweat pants, hoodies, and a warm sleeping bag. I’m at deep creek and it’s COLD at night. Water bottle, sunscreen, BUG SPRAY!!! If she will be in one of those canvas tents A MOSCITO NET!!! Good walking shoes. Good water shoes. No one cares about looking cute. |
Thank you all!! She and I are packing together because it’s requiring a lot of thought and consideration. It’s been hard to figure out since this is her first time at camp and there’s no laundry. It’s too late for the filing duffel - wish I had thought of that earlier.
I’m going to use your lists as DD and I decide what to remove. Thanks again. |
OP she is going to have an amazing time. Remember less is more because her new camp friends will have what she hasn't packed and she will have things they didn't pack.
Except underwear! Wear your own OP's DD. 😂 |
One thing my teen DD loves about camp is not caring about appearances. |
We just sent my son (11) to camp with this rolling duffle.
https://www.target.com/p/high-sierra-wheeled-drop-bottom-70l-duffel-bag-black-graphic-carton/-/A-80177972#lnk=sametab It is perfect, and we didn't even totally fill it. Duffle compartment on top, suitcase compartment on the bottom, large side pocket. We did send the linens and towels in a plastic bin w/ a latched lid, but they probably would have fit in the duffle as well (maybe not the blanket & pillow). https://www.target.com/p/sterilite-60qt-hinged-lid-latch-box/-/A-85013582#lnk=sametab |
