| PSA as some of you begin looking at colleges. This is by far the best resource for kids wondering where they can get in state tuition, questions about using the GI Bill, etc. It’s all super complicated and this is the best resource I had by far. |

Is this the same PSA as the "bring more than $20" poster?
Do you mean kids of parents who are in the military? |
Huh? I don’t even know what you mean. This is directed at kids who may be beneficiaries of their parents GI bills, or whose domicile follows their parents. Both the kids and the parents who may be helping their children looking at colleges and the related finances. How this post could be offensive, I’m not sure…or someone just peed in your cheerios today? |
Thank you!!! The whole process is very confusing and I had no idea the options available to DS for in-state tuition. |
Your child can go in-state wherever you maintain domicile AND where your orders are. If you have the GI Bill, all state colleges are required to give you in state tuition while you are using the GI Bill. Many states have extended it so that you can remain in-state after the GI Bill runs out. If you have the GI Bill there are lots of options to stay in state. If you’re looking at private colleges, the Yellow Ribbon Fund also supplements the GI Bill. That is just touching the surface. |
We live in MD. If DC goes to UVA (out of state) and uses the GI Bill does this mean we will pay In state of $15,000 out of pocket or in state minus gi bill, so $0 out of pocket? If DC uses gi bill at UMD, we would pay $0 |
There are states and schools that allow any active duty dependent to be instate regardless of the GI Bill. There are also ways to be strategic about how you use your GI benefits. This really is a complicated subject. |
They have to charge you in state rates while using the GI Bill. Fairly recent law that was passed. So In state minus the GI Bill, which should be close to free. (I believe housing allowances are a little different when using the GI Bill. You get tuition plus an allowance for room and board which may be slightly different than the university housing rate). In general, Virginia public universities revert you to out of state once the GI Bill runs out. |
Yes. That’s why I put my last sentence in and linked a group to get more info

In VA if you are 90% disabled tuition to all state schools is free allowing you to save GI Bill for graduate school.

Do you have a link to this bill? My son isn't using the GI Bill, but is receiving a payment for education benefits due to my husband's 100% VA disability status. I wonder if it applies to him as well. |
This names the law and is a good explanation. Kate Horrell is another good resource. HTH! https://www.katehorrell.com/gi-bill-in-state-tuition/ |
Thank you, I still cannot tell if it apples to Chapter 35 benefits. I emailed the VA office at my son's school, and requested to join the FB group. |

Two good links for people eligible for transferred GI Bill benefits:
https://www.va.gov/resources/in-state-tuition-rates-under-the-veterans-choice-act/ https://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/post911_residentraterequirements.asp The FB group is a great recommendation, but you need to read everything closely. For example, in state tuition is only guaranteed for dependents of veterans if used within three years of the veteran leaving the service. SOME states do grant in state tuition for anyone using the GI Bill, but the law doesn't require it. Again, read everything carefully as many of these questions are very fact specific. Once you start to use the benefits, its awesome! |
| Thank you OP! My son’s school confirmed he will charged in state tuition rates beginning July 31! You made my whole year. |
