How much money is UMD going to get from the B1G conference?

Anonymous
Now that UCLA and USC are partners it looks like it could be 100 million+ per year. Plus with UMD being the 8th highest public and 14th highest overall research budget nationally, it could increase those rankings as well.

I feel bad for Uva and UNC that could be stuck in the ACC with that horrible iron clad contract through 2036.

UNC offers no real sport except basketball. Same with UVA on a good year maybe. Much more likely for VATech to migrate out of ACC.

They are all stuck in the ACC. The grant of rights deal is ironclad and requires 12 schools to disband. Plus ESPN is getting the deal of the century for 14 more years. UMD really gut punched the ACC by leveraging its location value to the max. The dummies in the ACC had no idea UMD was the most valuable in the conference. They were so blinded by arrogance and abject fear that they didn’t have the intelligence to step back and assess their limitations.

Aren't the sports programs a net negative for the university? I mean the stadiums alone cost more than this.

I always thought this was a strange marriage and colleges would be better without it.

UVA is supposedly in talks with the SEC and B1G along with UNC. Clemson and Florida state are almost certainly headed for the SEC along with Miami. Pitt is rumored to the Big12. There is a GoR, but the rights were sold to ESPN who has every interest in boosting the SEC.

Not if you are in a conference with big TV rights. The BIG10 schools average something like $50m/year in sports revenue. Plus there is a recruiting benefit in the revenue sports which drives alumni donations, ticket sales, merchandise sales, etc.

How many years do you think a stadium is amortized over?

It’s branding. Big time sports increase applications. Yes they tend to spend all the money on sports and sometimes more than they make. UMD is good in the preppy sports .. lacrosse, field hockey, soccer, basketball. Gonna be more of a force in football with the gushing money.

In recent years, UNC's football program is far superior to UMD.

Unc has a good coach. But UMDs far more valuable and easy to monetize location has vaulted it beyond the ACC level.

The B1G and the CIC research coalition is probably a bigger deal money wise. UMD is top ten in research (public) with 1.2 billion per year. Michigan, Wisconsin, UMD, UCLA and affiliate member Hopkins (#1) are all huge and top ten. Wouldn’t be surprised if Stanford is the next invite with its huge research budget and Bay Area market along with Notre Dame for eyeballs and they end it. Every other school available in the country would lower the payout for each school. UNC splits North Carolina with Nc state and Uva with VT. They make the payout for each school go down after splitting it up with 2 more schools

Not even close for Big 10 (or whatever it is now) and SEC schools. Incredible amounts of money.

The lacrosse teams would take issue with that.

clemson, uva, miami and unc to SEC is pretty much a done deal.

The big 10 now has the most national championships than any other conference now that ucla has joined.

MD made the move for money and it was a very smart move.
