Tween-friendly shows in French?

Anonymous
Please recommend shows (Hulu, Prime, Netflix, Disney+) in French, with English subtitles, that would be fun to watch for a grown-up and a 12-year-old boy who is learning French. Preference for TV series over movies, but open to movies as well.

Au Revoir les Enfants

I don't know if it's streaming for free, but it's well worth the rental price.

I used to show it to my 9th grade class. It's excellent and very accessible to boys that age.

Le chant du loup

It's a movie, but it's good and appropriate for a boy.

Not sure about the others but you can flip almost anything into French on Disney+ - my middle schooler is also learning French and did this several times last year.

NP, looks like it's on HBO Max. Thanks. In your class, do you leave subtitles on? (Curious, it's been a long time since I learned a foreign language. We had to sit through all those episodes of Robert and Meirelle )

I did leave subtitles on because I showed it to my French I and II students, who obviously weren't fluent yet.

It was also a fairly poor, rural area where exposure to subtitles was itself educational. I remember many of my students groaning when they realized they would have to read while watching a movie ( ) and then being surprised how much they enjoyed it!

A French Village is one of the very best series (in any language) I've ever watched. May not be suitable for all tweens, so decide based on your own child's maturity. But it is so, so good.

French media, in general, is going to have a lot more sex and nudity. On the flip side, generally less graphic violence. Americans are the reverse.

Lupin. Such a fun series!

Any movie with Omar Sy in it. His French is very easy to understand!

Ah, you're right. I'd forgotten about the sex since the the drama was so powerful and memorable.
