| Our DC had a very light homework load in 5th grade, getting most day to day homework (aside from longer-term projects) done in study hall. We were kind of surprised how little out-of-school time was required for homework (given the nightmare stories we had heard about SFS workload) but we decided this was the year to let DC take charge of organizing homework time. End of year report was good. Now we are thinking about time commitments for next year (mainly sports) and wondering whether there will be a big bump up in the amount of time DC needs for school work. Also wondering if DC had an outlier teacher who didn’t really value homework as much? We are not fans of loading kids down with work— the science uniformly suggests that lots of homework is counterproductive and we completely agree. But I guess we are wondering if we should be worried about the other shoe dropping homework-wise in 6th grade? We were delighted with this year. Will next year be a rude awakening? |

If this is something you really care about, SFS HS will be going against your values. |

I just find it so incredibly odd that you'd ask this kind of a question on an anonymous board. Don't you know any parents of 6th or 7th graders? Doesn't SFS have any kind of community? And kind of list serve where parents talk to each other? Anything???
What are you paying so much money for? |
Seriously, if you are against homework, you’re at the wrong school. |

Agree. I’m also the parent of a rising SFS 6th grader. Talk to parents in our grade. Many of us have older kids who have been through the MS and US. Don’t you want input from actual SFS parents instead of random anonymous posters on this board? It’s a wonderful community — I urge you to take advantage of it. And FWIW, based on our older child’s experience, 6th grade does ramp up but is completely manageable. Expectations are higher but age-appropriate. We don’t have personal experience with the US. |

I'm a PP above (not the OP) and in their defense - I have not found it easy to ask these sorts of questions in the community. Especially if this family joined in years affected by the pandemic....it's been hard to make real connections. Granted, our family joined in HS and that's already hard to break into the community because so many families already have connections (so our friends are mostly new families who have no info on what's ahead). Maybe it'd different if you have joined in lower school when families may still be open to taking new ones into the fold.
Anyway - this is only meant in their defense...not as a complaint. Just sayin...the pandemic has resulted in some odd dynamics. |

6th grade = 20 percent more than 5th
7th and 8th grade = 25-50 percent more than 6th (depending on instructors, course choices etc) |
| 8th and 9th is relatively the same, but there is a jump in 10th and again in 11th. |
