my swimmer has been a club swimmer for the last 6 plus years. it is likely we will end our club training after this summer because he fails to make into an advanced training group. He does not want to join a senior development group. Logistically it is very hard to find another club/location to continue. He really loves swimming and wants to compete both at high school swimming competition and possible PVS meets as an unattached swimmer.
We know we can still register as an unattached swimmer without being a club member. I don't know how to participate a swimming meet ? Do we need to buy a software "Hy-Tek meet manager" to create a meet entry file to send it to the meet host ? |
Not sure where you are located but are you 100% sure there are no other club options in the vicinity? I'm sure you can continue unattached but it seems like a difficult road, plus your swimmer would lose out on the social aspect of being on a team. Hope you're able to find a good solution! |
Does the senior development group not allow the swimmers to still compete? We’re with one of the big clubs and there are multiple training groups for HS aged kids so that they don’t have to stop swimming and competing just because they aren’t in the top training group. |
Thanks, he will be in his high school team and likely he will be assigned to compete at each dual meet and even at divisional. That will motivate him to do his self-training. Speaking of social aspect he has been in this pool (very convenient for us) since at of 9. A lot people know him. It is like his home. That is another reason he does not want to relocate (in addition to logistics) Honestly he is unlikely to swim after he gets into college -- so we are talking about two remaining years to swim. If he can continue to compete at PVS Juniors Champs (SCY and LCM) that is really good enough for us. |
Yes they are allowed to compete. But for a swimmer who has been in an advanced group for last 5 years, this placement is like to "repeat grade" --- he has a big NO NO to that arrangement. He would rather do sets that he has been doing for years by himself. |
If unattached you do not need software to make meet entries. You have to reach out to the host of the meet and ask to be able to swim. All the fees and entry will be entered manually by them. You just need to be a USA Swimming member in good standing. The bigger issue is that he will not have a coach on deck to be his advocate. Sounds like AAC. |
Thanks so much ! I was about to purchase https://hytek.active.com/store/swim/MM8.0.html which seems wasteful for just one swimmer - ![]() We will certainly pay $90 something to PVS to register to keep good standing. By the way -- it is not AAC. Our club/location has a lot fast swimmers so we are fined being dumped, no hard feelings . Our swimmer was really inspired by his coach when he was 11/12 group and we will forever be grateful. |
I would look at the pvs meet announcements from last year to see how many were willing to take unattached swimmers. This seems really uncommon in PVS to me. It seems like they frequently say 'open to invited clubs' or something like that. an unattached swimmer is kind of a pain for the meet organizer. |
There are not many unattached swimmers and most of them are unattached because they are in the process of transferring clubs. https://www.pvswim.org/2122meet/22-106-ma.pdf it says • Teams Entering Unattached Athletes: Teams may enter athletes with an unattached status. • Individual Unattached Athletes may enter individually. <----- o Payment for unattached athletes is due in advance of the start of the meet. Contact the Meet Entry Coordinator for payment instructions. So we are considered Individual Unattached. If USA swimming let swimmers to register as unattached (no affliction with clubs) they should make some efforts to let unattached to compete, in particular Championships. |
I really don't think this is a thing. The unattached option is really for swimmers who are in the process of transferring clubs- its b/c a USA swimming rule is that 120 days must have elapsed between when you swim for one club and you start swimming for another club. So a swimmer that is say transferring from Machine to NCAP and is within their 120 day period will effectively be a NCAP swimmer. Officially they are 'unattached' but they will warm up with NCAP, sit with NCAP, etc. Along those lines a NCAP hosted meet will let that specific unattached swimmer in. A swimmer that is not part of any club and not planning to be part of any club?? Yes, Officially they can swim in things like the PVS championship meets- but your child is going to need to get some times at other meets to qualify for those meets. The other meets are hosted by clubs and those clubs set who is allowed to swim. USA swimming isn't allowing for unattached swimmers to swim b/c they want to encourage what you are doing- they are allowing it so that a kid doesn't have to not swim at all for 120 days. I've also seen a couple of officials talking about (more outside of PVS) getting their kid into meets as unattached by offering to officiate. I can see meets allowing that, they need officials. But I don't think your average meet is going to want to deal with 'unattached' swimmers that are unattached in the way you are talking about. |

• Payment for entries from unattached swimmers not affiliated with a team must be received prior to the meet. Payment may be made by cash or check. • Entry fees are due with meet entry. Unpaid fees will be reported to the PVS Administrative Office at the conclusion of the meet. What is "unattached swimmer not affiliated with a team" ? |
and there was a swimmer at that meet age 45 as unattached --- transferring between clubs ? |
it means a transferring swimmer. They are 'not affiliated with a team.' Look at the top of the meet announcement, it says 'Open to all USA Swimming Registered athletes of invited teams. Teams wishing to be invited should contact the Meet Director.' So yes, you could call up the meet director and say, will you let my 'unattached swimmer' who has no plans of affiliating with any team swim in this meet? Who knows, maybe they will say yes- I personally would say no. |
I don't understand what you are saying here- you see a 45 year old swimmer in the turkey claus showdown results swimming as unattached? Something else? |
