boarding my unspayed female

Anonymous
Hi! I am the one who asked about boarding my puppy with our trainer. She is 4 months old now and will be 4 1/2 months when boarded. We went to her house which is fine - but there will be a male puppy there the same age. Both about 4 months- neither spayed or neutered. The trainer wasn't worried - said the males testicles aren't even descended... but can my puppy get pregnant that young or not until she goes into heat?

She also has 4 cats-- assume this doesn't pose any health risk?

I am so torn on what to do with the pup-- the trainer is so qualified - it's just a bit chaotic with people, 4-5 other dogs, cats and a bird lol

A house sitter I may try but my dog loves socializing with other dogs and not sure about someone in our house...

Or a normal kennel type place seems clean and organized but I don't want her with 30 other dogs!

Stressed...

Whoa Nelly, breathe!

Any trainer worth a dollar knows how to monitor interaction and won’t be letting your dog loose with multiple others unless they are watching. It’s going to be okay. Send her and enjoy your trip.

(For the record, I’m a trainer, my puppy will be almost exactly 4 months when we go on vacation in July, and I’m boarding her with another trainer who has 3 (intact) dogs and 2 cats and it will be fine!)

Haha thanks. I am being crazy but this is my first dog. I know they won't be unattended but even if they are for 5 minutes!? The trainer does train other dogs so will be gone working some of the time. I am guessing/hoping her partner will then watch the dogs but I don't know if they are watched 24/7....i would hope but seems impossible.

The other option is a friend of ours with no dogs can watch her and she's home 24/7 and the neighbor has a friendly dog. Since you're a trainer: do you think much more fun for them to be in chaos with other dogs and cats than alone? Maybe I am thinking like a human not a dog!

It's fine.

I'm having trouble boarding my adult male dog - why husband adamantly refuses to neuter him and it reduces the options for care. My husband says he doesn't want to mutilate his dog... but the problem is, his dog hasn't had all the socializing he could have, since other dogs don't like him, and he occasionally gets reactive too. Maybe the problem isn't all hormonal, but you've got to wonder. Maybe surgery is worth having a richer social life?

Anyway. Your puppy will be fine.

Also she didn't seem to mention watching her (even though she better be) but more that the males testicles are undescended

If you are concerned, just have your friend with no dogs watch her. She'll get more one on one attention and will have the neighbor dog to play with. Although, the one benefit of boarding her with the trainer is that she won't pick up any bad behavioral habits (if she's a good trainer), also exposing her to the other dogs, cats, and bird is a good thing if it is done properly.

What is it with men iver identifying with their dog'stesticle? I had an uncle who was like this and the dog was a menace.

PP, your puppy won’t get pregnant from another puppy. She needs to go into heat, the male has to be mature, and so on. Relax.

It’s fine, OP. A 12-week puppy isn’t getting pregnant.

Um, yes. I'd force this issue. An under socialized, reactive, intact male dog is a menace. Neutering is NBD, do it.

OP here. Ok I'm over the pregnancy scare lol but now I'm wondering about the chaos level. Like 5 dogs plus 5 cats in a smaller house with not a lot of areas to roam. And I know socialization is great but why not socialize when we are there too? Meaning isn't it risky to leave her as a puppy to hope they all get along without issue? Or am I thinking like a human? I'm so confused. The friend option could work but will she lonely alone even though she's alone with us every day!?

How long are you boarding her? I’d do the friend instead of the chaos.

5-6 nights tops. I'm getting stressed so
Keep trying to shorten it. Flexible cause it's the beach!

Stay home. Dogs needs should come first.

Trainer option for sure. I know it's stressful for you -- I boarded my pup at 4 months as well -- although only for two nights.

I don't think a house sitter would do an active little puppy justice, honestly. And would never kennel a pup that young.
