Upping my game slightly re clothing brands - plus size

Anonymous
Would be interested in hearing from those that have found some good quality brands. I am between 1x and 2x. I wear Ann Taylor cardigan (xxl), jcrew (2x) tops and suits, Talbots 18w pants, and zuri xl. Also the occasional Boden xl. I’m looking to up my game a bit given my current position. I am not finding quality items that are for the mid-40 crowd. I don’t want to look like grandma, but I don’t want disposable clothes. Please help! I have an apple shape and a large chest.

It would help to know a bit more about what you’re looking for. Slacks? Sundresses? I’ve heard good things about Universal Standard, although I haven’t tried them myself. I get a lot from Nordstrom Rack, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus catalogs, Old Navy for casual stuff, asos for things that are a little different, and Talbots for classics. I also like Zuri dresses. And preppie classics like separates by Ralph Lauren. I’m more of a pear, though.

There are a few older threads — as in, within the last year —with similar questions.

Eileen Fisher is a favorite, but I don’t know if her stuff is flattering for an apple shape.

Here’s a recent-ish thread:

How much money do you have to spend? Lafayette 148 has plus sizes and 11 Honore has designer plus sizes (if people still needed proof that body positivity hasn’t yielded too much change, the siloing of plus sizes should be enough). Personally I can’t afford Lafayette 148 but that seems like it should be on secondhand sites often enough.

I can’t justify spending the 148 prices and the 11 honore doesn’t look great. Wow, there really isn’t a lot out there. I looked at all the previous thread and they all say the same thing and except for Anthropologie, where I already shop, there are no good leads.

I just want to add that I am Plus similar size as you (Pear shaped - 2x/18W/20W on bottom. XL/1X/16W on top). People are pointing you to older threads bc there really are not any suggestions out there. I live in select pieces from Talbots, JJill, Boden, LL Bean and Universal Thread from Target.

Quality and selection has only gotten worse since the pandemic. I havent actually bought anything from Boden since 2020. Talbots has no nice plus dresses this year.

I started a new job in the fall after taking time off to have a baby. I got 2 pairs of dress pants, 1 blazer and a few long cardigans/swackets. I wear nice cotton shells underneath and good accessories and i feel very presentable.

Not sure if this is still the case, but, pre-COVID I was sometimes able to find Lafayette at Nordstrom’s Rack for a fraction of the original prices. I got hooked on Lafayette back when Saks still carried Plus sizes.

What about checking ThredUp for used pieces from the brands mentioned?

For swimsuits and Oxford shirts: Lands End. Jeans: Torrid, Democracy, Good American. Pants: NYDJ, Ralph Lauren, Talbots. Jackets: Lafayette 148.
Casual Jackets: Talbots, Old Navy. Dresses: Talbots. Sweaters: Eileen Fisher. Bras: Chantelle.

If I get stuck and need something urgently, now that Lord & Taylor’s has closed, I guess I’d go to Nordstrom and then Macy’s.
I haven’t checked Lord & Taylor’s online, so I don’t know the quality. ASOS Curve is great for fun pieces.

I plan to try Spanx pants at some point, so if anyone here has tried them, it would be great to know what you think.
I’ve also heard good things about Universal Standard.
