When you could drive-up and park anywhere to watch the fireworks downtown (and DC was known as "downtown"). My dad would park our tiny compact car on some grassy section near the Tidal Basin and we all got out and walked to a good viewing spot. Never blinked an eye or thought twice.

Being able to take a tour of the WH by just getting in line outside and waiting for your turn to go in. No special tickets needed. No screening, background checks, etc.
