Gritty bits in crab cakes — Matt fish camp

Anonymous
We don’t get crab cakes often and got some tonight in Bethany from Matt Fish Camp. There were several bites which were gritty or had like a bone or something in it?? Is this normal or did they miff our order? This was at least 3 crab cakes with this problem.

It’s probably small bits of shell from when they picked the crabs. Completely normal.

Another reason to avoid crab cakes.
Why eat that stuff when you can eat the real thing, and pick out the meat yourself?

We don’t know how to eat crabs never had them before. The cakes were expensive too, $31 for two cakes and fries!

You're missing out on the actual crabs, my friend. You order crabs. You crack them open with a lobster cracker, and pick out the meat inside with a seafood pick. You can eat it as is (delicious if freshly caught and cooked), or with lemon or other sauces. You wipe your fingers with the provided wipe.

Crab cakes are never worth it. Seafood is always best as whole as possible.

I am a born and bred Marylander and I love cracking crabs but there is something mighty special about a certain kind of crab cake only purchasable in Maryland, usually out of a truck at a fair. A crab cake sandwich with almost no other ingredients other than binder (and not a single GD pimento). With a lot of Tartar. So good.

So. Much. Work.
I love crab cakes so much more.

Yeah, eating crabs is entertainment not a meal. We catch our own, but it's only fun to pick and eat if you're not really hungry. It's time consuming. Any little cuts on your hands hurt. But, it's a fun group activity and it tastes so good.

Yes, normal to get bits of shell. Matt's is one of my favorite restaurants in the area.

Matt’s Fish Camp doesn’t serve steamed crabs, and OP doesn’t know how to pick crabs anyway. Next.

LOL, someone who doesn't even understand crab cakes sometimes have bits of shell in them is not going to know how to pick a crab.

A first-time crab picker is going to get shell bits in practically every bite. Three in a crab cake will be a luxury compared to that.

I don't agree. The first time I ate a crab I didn't eat any shell. It's easy. You see the shell bits, you take them off. They're on the outside. If the shell bits are inside the crab cakes, it's frustrating and not the same thing at all.

I pick crabs soley to make crab cakes. We all have our own preference. We sometimes catch our own crabs too.
