worth it? so expensive.... |
i bought one and wish i hadn't. a simple rocking chair with padded seat and arms would have worked better. i had friends who loved the glider though so i guess it just depends on the person. but for me it was a regretted purchase! |
I loved my glider. You might be able to find one second hand. |
It was a Godsend for me. I got mine at Target for under $200. |
I love our upholstered glider - my DC and I spent sooooo much time in it nursing, napping, etc. Only wish that it reclined instead of getting the ottoman - it takes up too much space and it's tough to get it in the right spot and put your feet up on it when holding a baby. |
Yes! DD is 18 months and we still rock in it everynight. You can always look on Craigslist or Ebay for a less expensive option. |
I didn't have one for #1 but splurged on it for #2. I also got the matching rocking ottoman (Dutalier makes them). I loved it and wish I would have gotten for #1, but it isn't necessary. The great thing about being pregnant with your second is that you get to buy all those things you couldn't justify for #1. For me, it was the glider and a hot pink Maclaren umbrella stroller (volo maybe?). A plain old rocking chair will work fine unless you can convince some grandparent to give you the glider! |
We got a used one on craigslist for $100 in really good condition, we love it and still use it with DD almost two. |
You don't have to spend too much. We ordered one that cost under $300 from Great Beginnings. We didn't want anything huge anyway, so it's a little smaller but has the ottoman.

I never had one with DS and, in retrospect, wish I had. I think they're the right size, and the arms are in the right place, for BF. I spent a lot of time trying different chairs and couches in our house, with pillows propped everywhere, until I found something that worked well for me. If we have another kiddo, I'll almost certainly buy a glider -- but probably used, off Craig's List or on a super sale. I absolutely think it's one of those things you could wait on until the baby gets here and you see how things are working for you, and what kinds of routines you're settling into. You'll know then if you really need one or not . . . |
My first is 5 and want to know when we can move it back into his room--my second is 13 months and won't let me rock her unless she's latched on to the breast. Some babies like it better than others. But I like it just because the motion is better than sitting there doing nothing. And there are affordable options out there. We got our Dutalier at a sale at Baby 2 Teen in Manassas, I don't remember how much it was, but it was way less than if we'd ordered one. |
My daughter is now 16 months, and I have spent countless hours in our glider. My husband and I have many times commented on how it was our best baby item. We bought a floor model Dutalier at Buy Buy Baby, and it is really comfortable. Our daughter was colicky, and I spent many nights dozing in the chair while holding her. Literally could not have made it without it. |
Was a great investment for us. Didn't plan to get one due to the expense. Then about a month before my due date I realized I had no great place to sit with the baby - just formal or wooden chairs and sofas. I think you can get away without one if you have other seating options that are comfortable with good back and arm support. If not, then definitely get a glider. |
One reason I never liked normal rockers was that they tended to move backward while I rocked, and I'd eventually hit the wall. I found that to be highly annoying. I loved my glider -- it stayed put, and had a nice gentle rocking motion. I lived in that thing when my babies were newborns and wanted to be held to sleep! Even though my babies don't like to be rocked anymore, I sometimes find myself sitting in that thing just to rest my feet and have a moment of zen. |
As a PP said, for us this was probably the best big baby purchase we made. We got an overstuffed glider recliner, and it is in DD's room. This chair was used for hours and hours of nursing (after DD was more aware of her surroundings and got easily distracted, all nursing was done here), it is where bedtime stories are read every night, where good morning snuggles take place, where middle of the night comforting takes place when needed, etc. We have spent so much time in this chair, and it is SO comfortable, that if me or DH fall asleep in it, that's fine too. DD's room is very small, so we were worried about the space, and that's why we got the recliner rather than the separate ottoman. We spent a lot on it, but if we had paid twice as much for the chair it still would have been well worth it given how much use it has had and will continue to have over the years! |
