I put "Confederate" in quotes because I'm not sure how "Scarlet" and "Ranger" fall within the Confederate/Slavery umbrella.
https://wjla.com/news/local/fairfax-city-virginia-street-name-change-council-vote-mosby-woods-confederate-slavery-confederate-plantation-lee-ranger-stonewall Lots of quotes in the article from those wanting the change, but a conspicuous absence of voices from the other side. I'm not sure how I would feel about those names if they were my street, but I do know that changing a home address is a major league PITA. |

What are they going to change them to?
There was the renaming of Jefferson Davis Highway in Alexandria and later Arlington to Richmond Highway, continuing its name into Fairfax. Then there is just more hate to settle scores and let people know who is really in charge. Examples include any renaming on the opposite spectrum of race (still race/racist based messaging), political figures and people with no connection to the region, etc. Streets renamed during particular periods such as the 1920s, 1950s and 1960s, should just revert back to what they were before. Anything newer than that should get a letter or number, and be tabled for 20 years, until people grow up and don’t instinctively want to commit the same crime. |

Why?
Just leave them. They are hurting anyone. Scarlet? are you kidding me?? |
| So many lives will be improved by this. Just think of the children who’ll benefit. Amazing work. |
| Even if you change the name of the street, the racists still live there. |

Curious if any of the people in this thread are actually in the affected neighborhood. The people I know in that neighborhood don't object to changing. If others do, there is a public meeting coming up.
It's absolutely a property value concern (buyers will not choose to buy on Confederate Ln if they can go elsewhere) and a concern about being presumed racist because of what your street name is. |
“Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn” |
This is a really important point. A lot of Civil War memorials and the like weren't put up by veterans, they were put up decades later by people with a definite agenda. And the agenda that was common in the period after the two World Wars would be distasteful (or worse) today. Similarly, in DC people ask why do schools named after Woodrow Wilson, Francis Scott Key or Benjamin Stoddert have to be renamed? The reason has nothing to do with those historical figures per se. It has to do with the fact that those schools were put up when the city had just completed a massive removal of Black families from the western part of the city, and the schools were deliberately named to send a clear message about who was in charge. |
This is hysterical !! |
When we first moved down here, we had an apartment on Jefferson Davis highway and hating having to give our address |
You and the PP are idiots. Cheers. |
Why are you so invested in naming streets after traitors to the United States? |
I DGAF. But if you think people will confuse your sentiments with a street name you are a fool. If you drive a Bronco, are you a horse? |
No, obviously I'm a cowboy |
