PSA: Derecho/squall line possible overnight/early Tuesday morning

Last one was late June 2012…knocked a lot of people out of power for days.

Wow, I remember that storm-- it was insane! Crazy because it was nearly 10 years ago to the day. I remember because my son had a birthday party sleepover and the lights stayed out the entire night.

The 2012 one was insane. I remember I drove to VA beach that evening and I barely missed it but when I came back home, holy hell.

Yikes. I appreciate the PSA!

Thanks for the heads up! I remember being in my friend’s Arlington high rise. We were getting ready to go out for drinks, but thankfully were running behind. We could have gotten stuck in the elevator! We looked outside and saw trash cans and all sorts of debris blowing down the street. Crazy!

Yup we had no power for a week and it was almost 100 degrees the entire time. We finally reserved a hotel room and the power came back on a few hours later.

It won't be anything like 2012, which happened the evening of the hottest June day in recorded DC history (104 degrees). This will pass through in the morning when temps aren't nearly as high, so the storms won't have as much energy behind them. Could be strong storms, sure, but nothing like 2012.

Hope you're right. Power in my area was out for a couple of days and it was beastly hot--difficult to sleep.

That storm was insane, never seen anything like it. I remember being terrified the tree outside our house would fall. Somehow my DH and then 1 year old DS managed to sleep through the thunder, rain and wind.

The last directory sounded like a train was running through our back yard. We quickly moved our family (2 young children and a dog) to the basement. We had no power for a week, and by day 2 I took the kids and the dog to my parents home in Massachusettes. We didn't come back until the power was back and my spouse had tossed the spoiled food in the refrigerator.

Directory, heh heh.

I love auto correct.

I remember looking at the flag pole outside my building, and thinking it was going to fly off like a harpoon. It looked like it was nearly bending.

We never lost power, but I walked around the morning after to assess the damage. Lots of big downed trees and branches, but what I remember most were the swarms of bees. I don't know if the storm destroyed their hive or they were agitated from the weird weather event, but they were just swarming around like something from the old testament.

Who else had never heard of a derecho before that storm? I hadn't.
