Is it just me? What is with this school year?

So over it! My kids have, including today, 5 more full school days, one field trip day, and then two half days. Why are they still learning new concepts at this point? Why homework? Why did I just sign a paper about a brand new math concept that my kid bombed. BRAND NEW. You think he will remember any of this after the summer? Am I the only one completely over this year?

We go until next Wed and my school loving kid is so over it. These schools go too late into June and the kids, teachers and parents are extremely burned out.

Yeah every parent I talk to is over the year. For some reason it's been so draining. And my DD who loves school is over it. Everyone in our building is checked out from staff to kids. Next year will be worse for FCPS we start early and go later.

This thread proves you just can’t make parents happy. Another thread complained about teachers showing movies the last couple weeks of school. Some want a shorter school, others want year-round

Yes! I was going to say the same thing. Some parent was complaining because they aren't teaching new concepts the last two weeks of school after SOLs and my response was the same as OP's point -- my kids and I are so done. I'm glad they are done teaching.

OP, I am so done that I am not sending my DD to her last week at her private school. They aren't teaching anything new, she hasn't been happy there since February, and my DS is done on Friday. So we just told the school that Friday is DD's last day.

It's because there aren't enough large vacations in the school year that you feel burn-out.

In my home country of France, the summer vacation is shorter (one month and a half), but there are two-week breaks in mid-fall, around Christmas, mid-winter, and around but not necessarily at Easter. Two weeks is great, because it allows for a real re-charge. People can travel if they want, even to far-away places, and not have to worry about cramming it all in and jet lag. There is a system of subsidized childcare for parents who work.

So it's not year-round school, but the calendar is more evenly broken up.

But if we ended the school year two weeks earlier, the teachers would just stop teaching two weeks before that. It would be a vicious cycle.

I would be thrilled if school were more evenly spread out throughout the year with more frequent breaks.

I don’t think so. I think it’s LATE. It’s WARM. We are DONE.

Nah. My friends in other states where school ends in late May felt the same way in mid May. They were "DONE" too. Its mental, it doesn't have anything to do with the numeric date on the calendar. College students feel "DONE" in mid April.

I guess you’re right.

I guess for me it boils down to how stupid the last weeks are at ANY time. Learning new concepts the last full week of school? Why? But also, why even attend to do “fun” stuff like themed weeks, etc. I don’t know what the happy medium is. I guess we are all just destined to be miserable!

At our DCPS elementary, kids are still learning and kids/teachers don't seen burnt out.

Weren't you all demanding extended learning to 'recover' pandemic losses?

Its nuts that DCPS expects kids to come back after the Monday holiday.. we already go too late into June.
