Schools in Woodmoor Silver Spring

Anonymous
Can someone tell me about the Montgomery Knolls - Pine Crest - Eastern Middle - Blair school cluster? One of the areas in Silver Spring we are targeting is Woodmoor in Silver Spring. We like the neighborhood feel of it and it is close to our jobs and families. I am not familiar with Montgomery Knolls, Pine Crest or Eastern middle. Do most folks in the neighborhood send their kids to the local schools? Are most folks happy at these schools? Are there lottery programs to apply for at the elementary school level?

I know that Pine Crest hosts a regional CES and Eastern hosts the MS humanities magnet.

You might take a look at them at a glance reports for these schools for the basics, or give them a call and ask if you can take a tour to get a real sense of what they're like.

Not sure if it is still this way, but a lot of families in the neighborhood used to send their kids to St Bernadette’s.

Most Woodmoor kids are at St. B’s. If your child is not there, you will feel left out a lot of the neighborhood feel.

Why do most kids go to St. Bernadette’s? Are the local schools not good?

I live in Woodmoor and I disagree. A large number of kids go to the public schools - enough that there are two separate busses from the neighborhood (one for one side of the neighborhood and one for the other side) taking them to Montgomery Knolls.

Is it true that there is a requirement that kids attend Montgomery Knolls are bused to school? So you can’t drop off your kids at school and pick them up? I thought I read that on another thread.

Hello fellow Woodmoron! I agree - there are plenty of public school kids in the ‘hood. I have one at Eastern and one at Blair and all of their friends are in the neighborhood. I think the St. B’s thing was true years ago, but not as much now.

Their web site has dismissal instructions for car riders and walkers, so that wouldn't seem to be the case.

Definitely outdated advice

Eastern middle has it's struggles. The magnet is decently regarded but there is a large section of kids who don't really care about school and it starts to bubble up at those ages where it isn't as big an issue in the earlier grades. I sure it is true with all middle schools but there are numerous bulling issues between certain cliques.

Another Woodmoor resident here, with kids who have attended the public schools. There are large contingents of both public school kids and St. B's kids (and after toddler playgroups, we didn't intermingle much with the Catholic school families-- different sports leagues as well as academics, etc.).

My child is in high school, so a little outdated, but we definitely felt left out as our children were not at St. B's or the Catholic high schools. It's not that anyone was mean (it is a friendly neighborhood), it is just that the St. B's families definitely stuck together and there was a very large and active group. I did not feel that we had that group being from the public schools and I did not feel welcomed by the Catholic parents. I personally wish that I had moved to a neighborhood that was more cohesive. That said, my youngest is now in high school, so things might be different now.

I'd say that was true 50 or 60 years ago I don't think that's true now.

One of the reasons why there is a split articulation between Montgomery Knolls being a primary school and Pinecrest being the secondary is because there was just such low enrollment at Pinecrest due to the neighborhood being majority Catholic so rather than closing the school Montgomery county decided to split articulation between the two communities. Years later more families have moved in who are not Catholic and having older kids in public school.

There is a bus for children for kids who live within walking distance of one school but need a bus to get to the other school, I see the 3rd -5th grade kids who live near Montgomery Knolls waiting for the bus to pick them up and take them to Pinecrest in the morning.

Also the aftercare program for both schools is located at Pinecrest the Montgomery Knolls kids are bussed over there for aftercare
