Alternative to ground beef for meat eater

Anonymous
Ground beef tastes gross to me. I never remember it tasting this way when I was a kid. I get it at whole foods.. Please suggest an alternative for someone who still eats meat and likes recipes with ground beef. Thanks.

I use ground turkey in most recipes that call for ground beef.

Did you really need to crowdsource what other kind of meat exists?

Ground chicken. Ground turkey. Ground pork. Ground lamb.

Get an attachment to a food processor and grind your own meat. Tastes way better. Works great for chicken breast too, and can be cheaper.

It's quite different at different stores. Try a few different stores.

Does it consistently taste bad, or did you leave it too long before using? Have you tried different brands? My favorite is the Niman Ranch ground beef from WF. Try seasoning it with salt and pepper while it is browning to get rid of some of the gamey taste. That might help.

Op here. Im open to vegetarian/vegan options. I do not eat pork. Ground turkey also tastes funky. And..ground chicken? Dunno.

I always laugh at all the predictable “just use ground turkey” responses. The flavor is underwhelming and the consistency is disgusting.

Did you really need to post this witchy, childish retort instead of scrolling on by?

I'm the one who suggested turkey. I use it in heavily spiced dishes and it's very hard to tell that it's turkey. I would never use it for a burger. But do you have a helpful suggestion?

You have to get the ground turkey with more fat for the texture to be right. I agree with some things it is underwhelming, like burgers. But for things with lots of flavoring, like chili, it can be almost as good. You do have to adjust the seasonings.

Op- if you say what you are making, you might get better responses.

OP, what dishes do you need ground meat for? This will help me make suggestions.

Ground lamb for Keema Mattar and for burgers.

We like TVP in some of our ground beef recipes. Especially if you're not vegetarian and reconstitute it in beef broth it can be a pretty decent substitute. Makes a great shepherds pie, for instance.
