How much did you spend on nanny the past 12 months?
Just a total number. Feel free to break it down by hours, but more like a quick poll on totals is what I have in mind. If less than 12 months, please describe in total and for how long. |
$63,280 for 2021. Well worth the cost! |
$72,450 for 2021.
We have worked with the same nanny for 6 years. |

Not OP, but can folks share how many kids too? I’m trying to figure out if daycare makes sense with two under two. |
To us, it's not about cost, but about quality of care and lifestyle we want for our kids. Of course daycare would be cheaper. But we didn't want to rush our kids out the door in the mornings and worry about getting them packed up while also getting ourselves ready for work. We didn't want to be stressing and rushing out the door at the end of the work day to pick them up from daycare before getting fined or rushing home with a crying toddler because they're hungry for dinner. We didn't want them to only go to one or two nearby playgrounds to the daycare and maybe once a week have a field trip to the museum or zoo. It's just a completely different lifestyle. |
How much are you people making to pay 72k after tax income to an employee? It means you would have to make at least 140k just to break even and afford nanny, and at least 200k to make the extra income worth it (assuming you work just for the money)? So approx 200k income for the parent who would otherwise be caregiver seems to be the minimum income to have a nanny make sense? |
60k for 5 kids

We bring in seven figures a year. |
Daycare will be cheaper if that’s your only concern. |
Two working parents and prioritizing childcare. Our nanny basically earns my salary but she has a skill set we don’t have (preschool teacher and ECE degree) and I love my work. Two children. |
On paper my nanny earns more than me. Granted I have an employer 401k match and other soft factors. I don’t want to stay home. Staying home triggers my depression and anxiety and I become angry/ abusive. We need her. I had no idea of these emotions until I had a child. Now I build in as many supports as possible. |
This is about what we pay. Two kids in school. |
$72,000 for two kids averaging 44 hours/week and a date night/Saturday baby-sitting every other week. This amount includes taxes, bonus, birthday and Christmas gifts but not cash for outside meals/snacks/outings and extras like plane tickets for her to visit family, clothes and gifts for her children. |
Nindifférent than paying for private school for two kids. |
