Indepedent School Security

Anonymous
Hi,

My children are students at a DC Independent School, and I have serious reservations about their level of security on campus. I would like to get an idea of what security is like at other DC Independent schools, specifically:

* Are there guards (armed or otherwise)
* Locked doors
* Locked gates
* Anything else that makes you feel safe/unsafe with your children being there?

Thank you!

I don't know as I would discuss this here, gee. That's not helpful to kids and faculty anywhere in our DMV community. I will say that as a teacher I have been gratified by what I have observed at some schools, and been surprised by some others. I even went so far as to write one a note once on what I perceived to be a blind spot when I visited their campus. I would ask directly about this and also observe on a school tour. I would personally look less for armed guards and more for vigilance and a sense of vigilant adults throughout the building. Do know that when multiple people are greeting you, they may be amazingly friendly and they are also (rightly) checking you out.

Cameras everywhere though you can't see most of them. Security guards. Most security plans are not shared publicly, obviously, as that would defeat the purpose. Keep in mind that most incidents at schools are by people associated with the school in some way (former, tangential, estranged relative, etc). You don't give the fox a map of the henhouse.

Useless if they won’t take that risk.

Candidly, which armed security guard or officer (whether we're talking school, jewelry store, bank, prison, etc) would say they ARE NOT willing to risk their life? Unfortunately, I don't think anyone can give you an honest reply to that until they are truly in that situation.

I’m not in SC, but our private school has some doors that lock and some gates that lock, but there are ways to get in otherwise.

What happens if we secure all schools to the point of gunmen not be able to get in? So he won’t go to the school but instead a local Target, movie theater, ice cream parlor, church, etc.

Small Christian k8. We have security but he’s unarmed. Doors are locked but they’re glass so if u had a gun you could shoot them out and walk thru.

That's literally already happening ... churches, movie theaters, grocery stores.

Nowhere is 1000% secure, which is why gun reform is critically important.

I won’t say which school but I am very concerned about the lack of security at one of my child’s schools. Exams are taking place and no security guards to be seen anywhere. Drove by and no guard was at a usual spot - saw one person sitting in a chair scrolling on their phone and not even standing guard or looking up. This is not the time to be relaxed.

I visited 12+ public DC schools recently and: Doors and other points of entry (like gates to playgrounds/fields) are locked. Middle and high schools have metal detectors on entry. They all have security guards. I felt the public schools were secure.

Ha, would this happen to be a school that didn’t even have an outdoor guard until this school year?

How many shootings have occurred at independent schools in the past ten years? Anyone?
