Schools like UNC

My daughter fell in love with UNC over spring break, but given their 10% OOS acceptance rate, her chances are very slim. I am trying to find more schools for her to visit that are like UNC in terms of size, campus, etc. but are more likely to hit a target category for her.

Here are her stats as a junior:
1380 SAT (but can apply TO)
4.25 GPA (all As except 2 Bs in MS for HS level classes)
8 APs, 1 DE so far; 5 APs and 1 DE scheduled for next year
Varsity sports
Commissioner for a county board
Officer in four clubs
Belong to a few other clubs/honor societies/school committees; volunteers/works PT
Editor on school newspaper.

Yeah, UNC is tough to get in from out of state - you'd have nearly the same likelihood to get into an Ivy or near-Ivy. I'm not sure my DC would feel that comfortable going to a school that has minimum 82% hailing from one state anyway - that is very high % for a state school (though I think UGA is similar). Of course, it is a great school and if your kid is rah-rah sports, maybe a little preppy and Greek-ish, then it's probably a ton of fun. Kids there have mostly grown up as Carolina Blue fanatics, so I could imagine an outsider feeling a little out of place perhaps, but I've heard it is very welcoming at the same time.

Indiana, Syracuse, Clemson, Wisconsin, Penn State - all probably fun destinations and great educations.

UVA, VA Tech, UMD, University of Delaware, University of Georgia, Clemson.

The UNC Board of Governors sets the in-state vs out-of-state percent for all 16 of the universities in the UNC System. NC State is at the same cap, as well as the other schools (App State, UNC-Wilmington , Charlotte, etc.)

Agree with suggestions of Clemson, UVA, and Georgia.

Disagree with College Park, Syracuse, and Delaware.

I don't think the Clemson comment was a response to State flagship. I think it was a suggestion to look at Clemson.

We are in Maryland and based on the love for VA Tech on this forum, and what I've read elsewhere, we will definitely look at VA Tech next year for my kid and potentially apply ED if what we see backs up what we've read and heard. People seem to love it, even more than UVA, W&M or any other VA school, though just my perception.
