Did your Kindergartener ride the bus?

Anonymous
It just occurred to me that I opted for the bus option during school registration and paid the fee. Now I've stepped back and thinking "Ummm my kid is 5 and anxious. Should I have done drop off instead?" Do lots of other Kindergarteners ride the bus?

No. Five is too young unless they had older siblings looking out for them, It’s also too long a ride and too tiring.

My son did it for public PreK! Do it, especially if the times make sense. He LOVES it. Your child may get a bus badge to wear. My son thinks it's thr coolest thing ever.

We are only 2 or 3 stops from schools, so it's supposed to be a 7min ride according to the schedule. I'm having a mini freak out at "Five is too young" though.

That's encouraging! I'm second guessing because we had kindergarten screenings last week and he burst into tears. A group of 10 other rising kindergarteners happily ran into the screening room to "play some games", my kid was the only one sobbing. Argh.

I would definitely hold off on the bus then, OP. Driven for the first couple weeks and see where he’s at.

You're insane.

Both of our kids rode the bus starting in Kindergarten, when they were 5. The same age as almost every other kindergartner on their bus.

Of course they did

Terrible idea to make your kid that new weird kid that mommy wouldn’t let ride the bus until they were ready . School bus hierarchy will already be established by then and the kid is more likely to be teased

Of course they do, OP.

Riding the bus was the thing both my kids were most excited about!

Kindergarteners usually sit right up front near the driver.

Yes. My oldest cried on first day. After that he was fine. Youngest was always fine.

Ok good to hear, thank you! I definitely don't want to coddle... but if posters responded here with "Only a handful of kid's in my Kindergartener's class rode the bus," then I'd be inclined to drop the bus idea.

I think he will cry either way. I was thinking if I drive him to school, then he will get used to that. If he takes the bus from the beginning, maybe he will adjust faster?

Yes, the city bus. There are no school buses where we live. Everyone takes the train or the bus.
