Sponsoring a Ukrainian refugee?

I am considering doing this. We think we have the money (though not endless amounts) and my mom’s home has a basement apartment, and she has the time and interest. Has anyone else done this, or looked into it and want to shareadvice?

A few additional questions: how much money should we assume a refugee may need upon arrival to get set up? ($1000? $5000? More?) and where did people find matches?

The big problem would be covering health care. These people come with here with nothing. You might need a church to support everything.

OP, look up an organization like Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service. They will have instructions on how you can help.

Thanks! We found the branch that supports refugees from both Afghanistan and Ukraine right now in our area. Appreciate the info thus far and welcome any additional personal experiences. Also I have to laugh about the hot blonde comment - I can’t believe you’ve shattered my dreams there

I am looking to sponsor a former coworker and his family out of Afghanistan. Please share any and all information. TIA.

There are refugee organizations that can help with this, OP needs to contact them if she is planning to do this. Try IRC or others, they might help if there are willing sponsors more so than if there are none. Healthcare should be covered by the medical or some other means for the refugees, I don't think sponsors are on the hook to pay personal insurance, but this applies only to legally processed refugees that might have to come through official organizations. I don't know if all churches qualify as such organizations.

It is a huge commitment. Depends on how fast (if any) they can get a work authorization and start supporting themselves, you are looking at months, if not years of helping them in everyday life, driving them around, paying all the expenses and being a shoulder to cry on.
