How is it that students were dismissed right as SWAT teams were descending on the suspects in front of the school? |
My understanding from NextDoor and FaceBook reports is that the two events were pretty much occurring simultaneously. There were a lot of moving pieces and it sounds like the APD officer who was on the scene at the school did a great job getting the kids out of danger. The kids did what they were told for the most part and I think that helped keep them safe. It is very, very scary to hear about as a member of the community. |
I don't have kids at the school so I am only talking about what I've read or what I've heard from neighbors whose kids were at the school. Others may have different information. |
At my child’s school, each child was walked directly to the car during pick up, one at a time. Police were swarming the area right as carpool was happening and some kids were sheltered in place. We didn’t find out what was happening until after getting our kid. |
What school was this? |
There is already a thread in the local political forum.
The situation was fluid and simultaneous with dismissal. A large number of GW students walk home, so naturally a large number were outside. The two suspects were caught in the grass on Mt. Vernon in front of the school near the little playground. My kid and her friends thought they were students themselves and were very confused. Their normal route is to walk down Mt. Vernon to Braddock so they walked right into this. There are several videos that are circulating. Some kids did get VERY close because I think they didn't understand exactly what was going on and many were out there when it was just the two suspects on the ground and two police officers yelling. Very quickly there was an officer with a German Sheppard, another one with a HUGE gun, then the convoy of police cars came barreling down Mt. Vernon and stopped on the street. Yelling, screaming guns drawn. At this point my kid and her friends didn't know where to go because they needed to go in that direction to go home. I think they panicked once they started to realize that this was real and not some sort of drill. Police then started yelling at the kids to get back, to go into their home, shut and lock the door, but then one of the friends started crying "I can't get home because that's the way I go". Eventually a police officer rounded the crowd up and guided them past the scene, walked them across the baseball field and had them exit onto Braddock there. Ask you kid to show you video, the students are exchanging them online. I think the police did a good job with everything that happened so fast, but if those two suspects had had a gun I worry about what could have (but thankfully didn't) happen. Also my kid said they looked young enough to be students. There has been zero reporting re 2 people being arrested, and whether they are under 18. All I have read/heard officially is: "there were 5 people involved, all of them have been accounted for". What they need to say is: there were 4 people who tried to carjack one person, of those 4 1 is dead, 1 is in the hospital and 2 are in jail. |
9:25pm on Sunday and still no word.
I guess it's too much for parents to want an update before sending their kids back to the scene of a violent arrest. |
No information from the school whatsoever. And I know a few kids who got pushed out of the way and knocked down by the suspects as they were running THROUGH campus. |
Is this really the only arrest that took place at GWMS this year? |
What a complete failure on Mazur's part. |
I think he could only work with the information he had. He’s probably in the dark just as much as the rest of us parents. |
Police have released a little (but barely) information. Suspects were two 15 year olds (the ones arrested in front of GW) and two 18 year olds (one was killed, other injured).
You can read the supreme lack of ANY detail here (which is par for the course in Alexandria). https://www.alexandriava.gov/news-apd/2022-05-05/alexandria-police-department-investigates-shooting |
As much as we may not like it, the reality is the police department is not going to disclose a lot of detail during an active investigation. This is standard procedure. The are likely still speaking with witnesses, processing evidence, etc. |
One of the 18 year olds was in court and court documents state that the two who were arrested in front of GW were that 18 year old and 1 of the 15 year olds. They were armed, with at least one gun and brass knuckles.
The mother of the 18 year old that was killed is being quite vocal on social media and tv (channel 9). She even admits her son had a gun. We are all very lucky that the kids who were arrested in front of GW didn't take out their gun, etc. IMO the police did an excellent job in a very quick amount of time. |
