Waitstaff: is it annoying when guests ask for separate checks

Or to split checks?

The tips depend on it.

Only if I bring the check and then you ask.

It used to be, but now it’s a button press on a POS system. Just tell them in advance and don’t play musical seats.

A good waiter asks when it's a group that is probably not a family such as two couples.

Yes, very annoying when it's busy and manager is nowhere to be found. No, it's not just a button POS like another person writes.
No, doesn't matter if you tell me before. I need to put everything on the same check for the kitchen's sake and then later try to figure out who had what. Really depends on a place and POS they have.
So, tell me, the check is $42.35 and after me going through the splitting, one pays $20.35 and the other pays $22. What was the reason for your split exactly? Why not just give me two credit cards and fix the amount with the tip if $2 is so important?
The people who split are also the hardest customers usually. I can tell you who is going to split and who is not before they ask for the check. Also, please tip the same amount on the split check if possible.

Not true. None of my business to tell you that you all don't mine hanging out and having good time, but I bet you count every $ when it comes to paying the tab.

A good waiter does not ask. That's tacky.

It isn't simple and it takes time. Next time you're wonder where your waiter went off to, they are splitting a check.

Not true again. This must be some special kind of cheap restaurant that has button for it because they expect do many of those requests. We got our split removed because servers where doing funny things with it.

Got to love it when one pays cash and the rest goes on the credit card. The credit card person only tips on the credit card part even though enough cash was given to them to tip on the whole amount. This happens without fail every single time.

Yes. I’m not sure why people are arguing with the pp who is giving the correct answer. It is one of the most annoying things a customer can do.

How you feel is not my problem.

It’s really simple at Busboys and Poets.

The restaurant has to care enough to make it simple. In Canada, the waiter came to each individual and rang them up at the table separately with a handheld device. Easy.

That's Canada. In US, the waiter would complain why he has to do it 4 times instead of one. You can never win.
