Now they come for the gays: GOP Senators want FCC warnings on shows with LGBTQ characters

The letter states:

“In recent years, concerning topics of a sexual nature have become aggressively politicized and promoted in children’s programming, including irreversible and harmful experimental treatments for mental disorders like gender dysphoria.“

Can anyone give me an example of the children’s programming it’s referring to?

I watch a lot of CocoMelon, Pete the Cat, and Car Patrol of Car City. Ain’t no one talking about gender or sexual relationships.

I would love examples from these Senators. This feels like a Don Quixote expedition.

They've already been coming for the gays/LGBTQ community.

"...the annual number of anti-LGBTQ bills filed has skyrocketed from 41 bills in 2018 to 238 bills in less than three months of 2022. And this year’s historic tally quickly follows what some advocates had labeled the “worst year in recent history for LGBTQ state legislative attacks,” when 191 bills were proposed last year.

I’m not sure what this legislation is specifically referring to, but my 7 year old recently asked my husband why some kids have two dads. My husband just answered matter of factly that some families have a mom and a dad, some have two moms, some have two dads, some have one parent, etc. Basically that families come in different forms and that there is no one type of family that is necessarily normal or abnormal. He asked my son why he was asking that question and my son said that it was because of a show he had watched on Nickelodeon where the family had two dads. I personally think it’s great that this was shown in a “mainstream” kids’ TV show and that it could serve as a jumping off point for a conversation about families. I can’t imagine shutting down my son’s questions because of my own complex about what a normal family is. It’s hard to believe that in 2022 some politicians want to just deny the existence of people who don’t fit a certain norm. All that does is lead to more mental health problems among those who don’t fit a certain mold. It doesn’t change the prevalence of people who deviate from the so called norm. I have hope that people my son‘s age will change the world for the better because they will not look at the world through the lens that us adults do with all of our messed up thinking about what constitutes “normal”.

As I’ve always maintained: women, gay people, Black people, naturalized immigrants and similar groups are absolutely bananas to support the GOP. They will never be in the club, they will always just be tools of the GOP. The rest of us have figured this out and I wish these marginalized groups that the GOP wants to marginalize further would catch up.

Didn’t we go through all this like 10-15 years ago with an Arthur episode where someone had two moms? I feel like the GOP just recycles the same crap to see if it will get traction. Given the wild amount of content now available plus all the sites like common sense media that will tell you exactly what’s in any given show, there’s endless room for parents to create whatever narrow view they want for their kids’ entertainment viewing.

Anything to distract from their dumpster fire of a court leak. The FCC should put a black box warning on Fox News/OANN - “Will cause brain damage or self-destructive behaviors. Not suitable for children or low-IQ individuals.”
