[quote=Anonymous]I’m not sure what this legislation is specifically referring to, but my 7 year old recently asked my husband why some kids have two dads. My husband just answered matter of factly that some families have a mom and a dad, some have two moms, some have two dads, some have one parent, etc. Basically that families come in different forms and that there is no one type of family that is necessarily normal or abnormal. He asked my son why he was asking that question and my son said that it was because of a show he had watched on Nickelodeon where the family had two dads. I personally think it’s great that this was shown in a “mainstream” kids’ TV show and that it could serve as a jumping off point for a conversation about families. I can’t imagine shutting down my son’s questions because of my own complex about what a normal family is. It’s hard to believe that in 2022 some politicians want to just deny the existence of people who don’t fit a certain norm. All that does is lead to more mental health problems among those who don’t fit a certain mold. It doesn’t change the prevalence of people who deviate from the so called norm. I have hope that people my son‘s age will change the world for the better because they will not look at the world through the lens that us adults do with all of our messed up thinking about what constitutes “normal”.
