A bunch of preening white people in a muddy field under perpetually overcast skies thinking they are “sophisticated” and doing their best cosplay of American royalty.
Meanwhile, a bunch of Latino immigrants are actually getting sh#t done, training and riding the horses, running the event. It’s sadly comical. Is there a better allegory for the degenerate navel gazing of the American elite? I’m watching this on TV and just gobsmacked by how they interview wealthy housewives about their dumb hats while ignoring everyone who makes it happen. |
| You've never been to a Derby, have you OP? It's a blast and should be on everyone's bucket list. |
|
While I don’t personally get the appeal of the derby, I try not to throw stones because I’m sure there are things I’ve attended as a white person where all of the prep and clean up etc. were done by POC.
And why do you claim this is so American? Wimbledon is a bunch of white people dressed in cosplay while I’m sure POC clean the grounds and bathrooms etc. |

Is there any other sporting event where the audience is more important than the athletes? Because that’s what The Derby is. Further, has there ever been a sunny Derby? Every time I watch it, it looks miserably rainy and overcast.
Meh. |

I disagree. For one, Latino immigrants do not train the horses. Also those riders get some good money if they win the derby. The jockeys riding the horses are athletes not just some “Latino immigrant”. Yes, there are stable cleaners, etc. which may be a low paid worker.
The derby has a lot of gambling. And I don’t think of gambling as a singular early American past time. Yes, the hats are kind of crazy. Similar to going to a wedding in England where are you will see women wearing fascinator‘s The hats that women wear to the derby are fun and each woman tries to outdo the others. |
You’re right. Latinos need to get out and let others get sh#t done, train and ride the horses, and run the event. |
Are you new to the world? Do you think polo, the Met gala, the Oscars, etc are testaments to equality? Btw, who made your take out dinner last night and who delivered it? Who made your shoes? |
| You can always tell when someone hasn't travelled. |
| How is it sadly American? It is in America, hence the state of Kentucky. Do you want it to be Canadian, French, Turkish, Chinese? What do you expect it to be? |
| My Twitter feed is filled a lot of African-Americans celebrating the Derby today. |
| This is the most ignorant opinion I've read on the internet in a long time. You know nothing of horse racing or the Kentucky Derby. |
+1. OP is just jealous that she's spending a rainy day on her couch with her cat. |
|
What kinda post is this? Have you ever been? I’m black and I’ve been and they’re kinda fun. What do you have against your own country?
Why do people love sparking divisive topics here? I don’t get it. |

Frankly, since the exposés about the treatment of these racehorses made the news a few years ago, I have not been able to enjoy any of these events. The number of horses that have to be euthanized because they are drugged to withstand grueling training and end up injured is horrific.
But yes, OP, it is sadly American. Those news stories showed also pointed out that the standard of care is very different in Europe. |
