Which school would you pick for a computer science major? |
duke |
Wow! very good schools! Congrats!! probably Duke |
Duke obviously. |
Rice belongs to a certain tier of schools (the others are WashU, Emory, Tufts, maybe Vanderbilt) that are all sort of non-descript, almost-elite-but-not-quite schools that don't really have any distinguishing, standout characteristics and are all sort of interchangeable. Duke is the way to go. |
Duke |
Each of these schools is strong, but neither has something for everyone. Stated differently, each is a good fit for certain types students, but not others, compared to HYPS where there is a niche for everyone who can get in.
More social, rah-rah types would tend to prefer Duke, and more introspective, intellectual kids would tend to prefer Rice. |
Good points. What is the main draw of Rice? Is it the pipeline to venture capital and Silicon Valley? Something else? |
Milk shake or ice cream float? |
This is so important. A less extrovert kid would feel lonely at Duke. Please check Duke sub reddits. The only exception is if you are East Asian---they have buit up a strong non Greek community there. |
I would say a kind collaborative fun yet academically focused culture for RICE. |
Duke is higher on the prestige scale. If social sciences, I would say Duke. But for CS major, access to internships and tech hubs is very important. Houston is not a tech hub but Austin 3 hours away is becoming a HUGE and growing one. |
RICE all the way. Especially for CS major.
|
Yes, exactly. Rice is a fantastic school, particularly for STEM subjects. Plus it's a smaller, very warm and friendly student body. For CS it's a no-brainer. |
yes, Please!! For CS, go to one known for STEM. |
