Thoughts on "hippy" names?

Anonymous
I'm trying to decide on names and I keep coming back to hippy/celebrity names or names others would consider ridiculous. Both my partner and I have extremely long and formal names and were thinking about fun names but maybe it's just a bad idea or just keep them as middle names. Thoughts?

Do you mean like Moonbeam? I had a TA in college with a name like that. She would joke about having that name and her parents but she went by another day-to-day.

Yeah. We talked about if it is a boy naming him Arrow and we like Mars if it is a girl. We just like the fun names better. The "normal" names if it's too ridiculous would be Aaron or Marcheline and call them Arrow or Mars as a nickname.

I think people have more questions about the parents than giving the kids a hard time. So many plain names today actually have weird meanings that we don’t even thing about today. Some people will get hung up on it and others won’t. Ultimately it’s up to you.

What names are you thinking of?

I like a lot of mild hippie names like Wren and Sage. Lyric is pretty. I love Jagger and Hart (celebrity names).

Just make the middle name Bohemian, like Jane Love smith, Jane Sun smith, Jane Moon Smith.

I used to live in a pretty hippy community and some names of my kids classmates were:

Willow
Sycamore
Winter
Fox (though I suspect the parents might have been X-Files fans)

Arrow is a cool name.
I think Mars is too much. Why Marcheline? Why not Mara?
I feel like I can see Arrow on a resume but never Mars. Like, would you go to a dr named Mars?

I actually know an Arrow and don't mind Mars. Although I am surprised at Mars for a girl – I associate a male god with it.

Also, don’t underestimate how annoying it is to have a name where people aren’t sure what they heard. At least with “Apple,” people know they heard Apple. Same with Fox, Sage, Willow, etc. I think with Arrow, people with always be like “did you say Aaron?” It gets old.

My daughter has a name that is pretty simple but sort of uncommon, and people never understand what it is. They always think it’s something else. It’s annoying.

Don't do this to your kid. Give then normal names and call them by the hippy name. My sister did this with her kids. I call them by their formal names because their hippy names are stupid. Of course, I don't tell her what I really think of her choice, but at least she didn't burden her kids for life.

I always loved "nature" names and I let DH talk me out of it for resume type reasons: River, Sunny, Willow, Winter, Sage, Luna, Summer. My kids ended up with more sedate, traditional names and I secretly regret it. Go for it.

What if Arrow was gay?

Me again... plus my mom has a foreign accent so the hippy names sound extremely ridiculous when she says them. It's cringe worthy, but I just smile. It wasn't my choice. Imagine how your kid's name would be pronounced when they enter the workplace. What if they work abroad? For a multinational? At a construction site? If you're happy with the pronunciation and possible perceptions of your kid (and you) then who are we to judge? (We will judge, just not to your face).

I love hippy names. I say go for it. in fact I'd name them:

Arrow Aaron
Mars Marcheline (this is _such_ a great name)

So they can choose.
