| Looking for first-hand experience, especially for Loiederman - thanks! |
It is watered down at this point with the lottery. |
MSMC schools have always had admission by lottery. |
I have a friend whose kid is in the current 6th grade so this is only anecdotal, but they're happy with the program. It seems like they touch on more than the regular curriculum that non-lottery winners get. |
| I have a seventh grader at Loiederman - it has been a great experience so far. |
Is it still the old lottery? The old lottery did not help achieve MCPS goals of equity and I thought they changed it recently |
This response perfectly illustrates why no one should trust DCUM for a factual analysis of any question. The MSMC programs have ALWAYS been admission by lottery. There is no point in their existence when they were a criteria-based program. So PP comes in with no knowledge of MCPS, maybe even not posting from this county let alone this state, and tries to dredge up white/Asian resentment by commenting that the program is "watered down." It's gross. |
No. You are conflating two different programs. Loiederman, Parkland, and Argyle are the middle school magnet consortium. |
Moscow, Idaho or Moscow, Russia?
|
or just a homegrown culture warrior? |
| We have loved our child's experience at Loiederman and it is the only middle school in the county with it's own (and brand new) performing arts center. If your child loves the arts, it's definitely worth it, and the teachers and administration have been amazing. My child has really loved almost all of their teachers the past few years, and they seem to really care. It's a special place and very different from the middle school experiences I hear other parents talk about. |
The classes and program are the same for out-of-boundary (lottery winners) and in-boundary students. I have a 5th grader who attends one of the MSMC ES for a special program. Many of her friends chose Loiederman and she was selected via the lottery. We talked with many parents we know with kids there and they were very happy. It's a good environment especially for girls and boys who are more sensitive and artsy, as it has a higher % of female students. The arts lean more to performing than visual, but there are visual arts electives for each year. The block scheduling means they have 8 classes instead of 7, so they can take another elective. It's a good way to try something new and see if they like it. |
These are all the reasons to choose it. I thought they did virtual really well but this year has been hit or miss. The 8 classes is great. Some of the arts teachers are hit or miss. Academic teachers are pretty good. We don't find the administration or counselor that responsive and have emailed over an issue multiple times and no response. |
| OP here, thanks for the responses! How likely is it to get in as an out-of-boundary student? |
It really is luck with the lottery. Its hard to guess if its a real lottery or kids are specifically chosen by MCPS. Not a huge number of out of bounds get in. |
