Is anyone else concerned that these are going to turn into superspreader events (eg. DC Gridiron dinner)?
Are any schools taking precautions or reconsidering these large social gatherings? Seems like a recipe for a school outbreak, especially given the current trajectory in our area. DC cases just doubled! |
| The CDC, the President and luminaries from Leana Wen to Emily Oster to DCUM itself have told us the pandemic is over and there’s no reason to have any sort of health measures. Who are we to question such a panel of experts? |
| Yes, I am concerned. |
| Many luminaries have also caught the common cold. Definite shut Easter down. |
I am too but I’m also confident they will be canceled. We had a couple good months to squeeze things in and nobody wants their kids to miss a week of school because of spread from a father-daughter dance or auction. |
| One very troubling thing is that, by holding parent social events that increase the spread, schools are exposing teachers and staff to an unfair amount of risk. It’s one thing to drop the mask requirement but entirely another to increase community spread with unnecessary events. |
|
I feel so many people are invested in the idea that “we are back to normal” that cancellations are unlikely.
Wish our school would consider moving the auction outdoors rather than hosting in the school gymnasium. |
| Can folks link their online auctions here? I love browsing and shopping them! |
I agree with you. Should be cancelled but “over it” moms will forge on, common sense be damned. . |
Great idea! I do, too! |
| Our spring benefit is scheduled to be outdoors (school playground) at the end of the month (formerly held inside the Cathedral). Grateful BVR pivoted and allowed everyone to feel comfortable to attend, esp. with numbers rising. |

I have no interest in events (and I'm donating to our auction rather than going). But I don’t have an issue with holding galas/auctions/shows right now. CDC & DC Health's community level system isn't perfect, but it's clear and reasonable. It takes both cases and hospitalization into account, but weights the latter more. And DC is still "Low" of yesterday, so there’s no public health reason not to hold an event right now. I'm not going to fault anyone who is fully operating within the guidance.
(It’s also impossible to time anything with the lowest possible case numbers. I mean that would be great, but it’s like trying to game the stock market.) |
| Our school has plenty of outdoor space, and I wish they would change it to an outdoor/tent with open sides event. Our school already has a tent and outdoor space around it. They can cater the event from the venue they were originally going to use. |
| Quit the fear mongering. I went to one indoor gala with hundreds of attendees and it did not result in a superspreader event or even a nominal uptick until the school’s regular testing. |
|
Our school just had their indoor spring fundraiser a week ago and then this weekend had their students do their theater performances with over 200 in attendance. Most were unmasked and there were many young children and elderly grandparents. So far no indication of any super spreading situations. Will people get sick? Yes. My husband caught something this weekend. It's just not covid. He might have been better off with covid. Seriously.
