Thank you.

Trump: "It's just common sense. We want to have the best people and we don't. This is a big chess game. These are complex computer systems and we want the best. And we don't use the best. There are certain countries with genius computer systems and we didn't buy those. We need the best computer systems for aviation."

OMFG

Did Trump buy these computers in the 4 years he was President?

Nextgen has been upgrading the current ATC network for the last 20+ years. It's a never ending gold mine for contractors.

Are you F kidding. It took you this long for it to "sink in?"

Something happened inside the helo. Could be a regular old mistake, a medical emergency, or a mechanical problem.

This isn't the ATC's fault.

I assume military aircraft have black boxes as well. We need the info from that to understand what happened.

Trump says they aren't qualified individuals, so leave. Let him try to staff it with people he deems qualified.

The US has never invested in any infrastructure outside of air travel. Let the US crumble because of its terrible, greedy decisions.

They need to quit in masse. That would incredible. Oh, please, please, please do it.

And do what? This is what they are trained to do, this is their career. There are not massive amounts of jobs for ATCs. They have a very stressful job and I feel for each and every person in that tower, and the others on high alert every day.

PP is probably one of the Save Our Skies nuts.

Anonymous wrote:Trump's comms team did not advise him well on this. Blaming it on DEI and implying the air traffic controllers may have messed up because they have psychiatric disabilities is not wise. Also, the FAA's rules around disabilities are the same as every federal agencies. The rules are nothing new and were in place during Trump's first term. He is saying ATCs are mentally incompetent. He doesn't even know who made the mistake at this point.

This is from the Federal Aviation Administration before trump:

Individuals with targeted or “severe” disabilities are the most under-represented segment of the Federal workforce. The People with Disabilities Program (PWD) ensures that people with disabilities have equal Federal employment opportunities. The FAA actively recruits, hires, promotes, retains, develops and advances people with disabilities.

The FAA meets the goals of the PWD Program through a variety of practices:

Targeted disabilities are those disabilities that the Federal government, as a matter of policy, has identified for special emphasis in recruitment and hiring. They include hearing, vision, missing extremities, partial paralysis, complete paralysis, epilepsy, severe intellectual disability, psychiatric disability and dwarfism.

FAA has 35,000 employees....of which only 14,000 are ATCs. Why is it a problem for FAA to employ someone in a non-ATC role that has paralysis? Or vision impairment?

ATCs are held to strict medical standards, but someone missing an extremity or dwarfism could do the job. Obviously they can't have a vision or hearing impairment. But people with certain disabilities can be cleared to be an ATC.

Is this supposed to be a gotcha? There's 21,000 FAA employees in non-ATC roles.

Absolutely. They have a job that I cannot even begin to imagine.

Anonymous wrote:In Europe the ATC will call out specifically where there may be something impeding an approach by a plane - so it's not a visual approach by the pilot(s). In other words, they aren't going to leave it in human hands. It's a lot of risk because people do make mistakes. Many European pilots will not accept visual approaches when they come into US. Our processes are much looser than many other countries and some foreign pilots scoff at them. This is an example.

Well, those are still human hands.
But their system does sound safer/more precise.

The "issue" with the European method is that you need more people working ATC to talk individual aircraft through their take-offs/landings/passes through airspace. This, in turn, will reduce the number of take-offs/landings possible relative to just visual approach alone.

We possibly couldn't have that reduction in profits in the US!

Should have known : another example of capitalism valued over humanism.

Not one word, not one peep out of DoD.

Where the hell is Hegseth, or at a minimum, his "crackerjack" experienced spokesman John Ullyot?

Ullyot had no problem getting the word out that they were stripping Milley of clearances just a few hours earlier.

Be he's mum on this???

Secretary BoozeBag’s “statement” was a tweet that said his department was “poised to assist if needed.” MFer, your department CAUSED this accident, so put down the Pappy and do your freaking job. They are all such cowards.

This is wrong. Both hegseth and trump issued statements before 11:00 last night. Not fans of either but this is incorrect.

WH put out generic statement. Trump was absent until 1 am and then blamed the air traffic controllers at the agency where he had just fired their director and many others.

Then Trump wrote “NOT GOOD” like a six year old.

His first statement said “praying for their souls” at a point when they were still in rescue mode officially. He may have been briefed that there were likely no survivors but it’s super tacky to say you’re praying for the soul of someone when there are still search and rescue operations to find them. It’s a small sign that he is just not processing details correctly.

“Souls” is a commonly used terms in this situation. It has nautical origins. Doing this for the next 4 years or more is really not healthy for your mind or soul. Stop.

Well whatever the origins, here in 2025 we use that word when people are dead.

I would like to hear the DoD say they are suspending all non-essential helicopter flights in the DC area pending an investigation. They won't, but they should.

Given this incident, there is no reason for DoD to be using airspace around DC for ordinary transport (that could easily and efficiently be done by car) or for training.

They won't do this though because it would raise the question of whether it was irresponsible to be using helicopters so extensively for these non-essential purposes in the first place.

💯. I was burying my head in the sand but this was brutal.

I read something on Reddit about how sometimes when something is right in front of you in airspace your perception of distance can be wildly skewed. It’s been less than 24 hours, but it seems likely we’ll eventually have an answer. This is so unbelievably tragic.
