Carlson is just the new boogeyman media needs to beat up on. Wapo/Nytimes/Cnn/Msnbc/Dailybeast don't want him off the air, they want to build him up into something bigger and scarier than he actually is. Only a couple million senile old white grandpas watch Tucker in a nation of upwards of 400 million. Cable news in general is irrelevant.
