I don’t think you get how damaging that line is to WTU’s support in the real world.

They don’t care. They represent teachers, that’s the only opinion that should matter. The police unions don’t ask you what you think, nor do they care. The trucker/long shore man/electrician unions don’t care what the public thinks either. Their world is limited to their members, as it should be.

I have been comparing the WTU to police unions to demonstrate how badly the WTU is behaving. This is the first time I have ever seen that cast as a positive thing. It's not.

It's also really clear that you have never been a member of a union.

My statement is neither pro or anti-union. It merely states that unions represent their members.

I have been a member of a union. I also a have LE sibling who union stood up for her after a severe sexual harassment incident. But I realize if I don’t post anything but hateful rage at WTU, you must attack me.

It is very, very uncommon for a public service union to declare that they have no interest in or duty regarding their public service recipients’ interests. I was actually shocked when WTU supporters started trotting out that line here. The obvious response is that you lose a whole lot of parent and citizen support for WTU, but you can’t seem to accept that either. By pushing this line WTU loses so much credibility in its negotiations as well - I have no reason to believe you’re engaged in a good faith effort to protect your members vs trying to use the pandemic as leverage.

Oh I assumed it was a given that they’ve been using the pandemic as leverage.

Bunch of Chicken Littles with too much time on their hands live on this board spouting nonsense and getting people riled up.

I wish you were right, but have you seen this quote from the Deputy Mayor for Education below (from an earlier post)? I really do get what you are saying, but we have to go with what we have heard from the city, however illogical it may sound. The Chancellor has said that they are planning for different health scenarios concurrently to know whether to offer full-time or hybrid in the fall. If we were hearing the same thing Maryland and Virginia were hearing: e.g. that the plan is five full days per week in person then this thread would probably not be here.

"We also believe and, I know I personally think this, the virus is insidious and we have no idea what the world will look like in September. We do know that there will be no child vaccine, probably, by then and so we need to prepare for a September that is not necessarily going to be normal. So we should be preparing for a September that could have some version of hybrid or virtual ongoing. So we also think it's important that we continue to support our teachers who are at the center of this endeavor as they continue strengthening their virtual education skills.”

Which is exactly why parents shouldn't align with WTU to advocate for the CHILDREN.

A very good and common union strategy is to piss off both management and your clients while failing to perform your work adequately.

It is excellent for unions to be completely isolated and without allies. It is known to be good for negotiations.

You aren’t educated on the topic apparently. I wish you were right! Shockingly that’s not the case in DC.

I’m actually a teacher who was assigned in person learning (once a week) last month. I fully expect school to be back to whatever the new normal is in the fall. I have no reason to believe otherwise. Kids can’t stay out of school forever.

This is what I have told my kids. Plan on it! Everyone wants to get back to normal.

What do you expect the "new normal" to be? Hybrid? 4 days?

lol and the part where they're saying they have no duty to their recipient's interests... who are children. They are willing to harm kids if that gets them what they want.

A public sector union that hurts kids.

This is the worst messaging.

Exactly! Teachers who are willing to hurt kids to get what they want - and they did. And now WTU is trying to get parents to partner with them. Shameless.

Yes teacher PP, look into your crystal ball and tell us what will life be like in 5/6 months. Also be sure to add negative comments about WTU so PPs will take your prediction as gospel truth.

You probably need to seek some sort of meditation practice.

The teacher PP made a prediction. S/he used the words "new normal". A person asked what that meant.

Why is that cause for sneering condescension like you express?

Also from the WTU conference tomorrow - this is one of their sessions.

"Learn about the protections that our school systems are putting in place in DC and across the nation to protect educators and students from the coronavirus. This session will include information on how to report your concerns to ensure your on-going safety as well as that of your students."

WOW a union that is talking about how to protect the safety of students. But they make a quick and easy demon to your situation so tell me I'm a troll.
