I was going to suggest Wooster as a safety for your dd. They have EA and give out lots of merit. The kids are down to earth and my dc (who attends) says many talk about money issues, etc so it is definitely not filled with all UMC kids - this is a good thing IMO. |
Brandeis |
Carleton is ranked higher and is a better school by every metric. |
A great experience I am sure, as long as you are not the wrong race. But the OP made it rather clear she was looking for academic & intellectual environment, not social experience. |
She’s in a doctoral program. You think that’s not academic and intellectual? |
OP thanks. Ongoing good advice.
There seems to be a W&L poster on these threads. Here’s the thing, my daughter is not that into you. If we are supposed to be letting kids lead the way, mine has said: no significant Greek scene, no Southern, no alcohol and parties focused social scene. I’m not insulting W&L. I’m sure it’s alums are successful and do great things. I believe there was a recent thread on W&LL where it might be more appropriate to argue about its merits. But, this kid would be a terrible fit. |
I did post about my daughter at W&L and your post regarding her preferences makes perfect sense. I never once tried to convince you to send your daughter there or to be into me(?), which is an odd comment. I just wanted to push back against the notion (made by someone else I think) that it wasn’t an academic or intellectual environment. Best of luck in your search. Your daughter sounds like she’s very together and knows what she wants. I have another going to Swarthmore next year so I’ll add my recommendation there. Checks some boxes you’ve indicated. My swattie also liked Hamilton, Haverford, and Amherst. |
No, I don't. UIUC sends scores of students to doctoral programs every year, I certainly wouldn't classify the vast majority of the student population at UIUC as "intellectual, academic" (although perhaps they are well-grounded - W&L kids generally are not). There are certainly intellectual students at W&L, but often they are the conservative-affiliated types. Which just makes it worse. |
Moron checking in. |
DCUM is a funny place. Today I’ve read about how Middlebury (too SJW), Washington and Lee (not intellectual or academic), and Swarthmore (untrustworthy because of goofy emails) basically suck, three of the best LACs on planet earth. Hard to fathom. |
Really depends on what doctoral program. Most PhDs I know are not what I would consider intellectual. |
Agree Rhodes is phenomenal school. But Memphis is the worse city in the country. No thanks. |
You can post on this forum without checking in, moron. I understand the maitre generally turns you away with one look, but this is the internet. |
Having W&L in the same tier as Swarthmore and Middlebury is certainly a weird decision. |
Who needs USNWR when we have you? Thanks. |
