My aunt ran a deli in Manhattan and she always buttered pbj sandwiches. I think she buttered every kind of sandwich. Everything that came out of there was delicious. |
I’m not catholic, but DH’s family is. I heard it was just no “meat.” So I’m pretty sure they could still have baked potatoes with butter and sour cream. |
My dad cooked really weird foods, but my mom only made one “weird” dish that she learned from her mom and I later learned was an old fashioned British/Irish food. We are mixed AA. It was basically buttered bread sprinkled with sugar, cut into 4 long strips, and doused in warm milk. We ate this as a bedtime snack. I never thought it was anything other than a family quirk until I was an adult. |
Western Lent is less stringent than Eastern. I know people who are Orthodox and don’t touch dairy or eggs for the entire season. Catholics just abstain from red meat, pork, and poultry on Fridays. |
| Sugar sprinkled on top of many foods. Chili, creamed peas and cottage cheese to name a few. Also, a "kid-friendly" meal in her mind was to halve a banana, put a glob of mayo on top (to take the place of ice cream) and sprinkle that with nuts and chocolate sauce. This was a main dish to her. |
| For picnics-peanut butter with bacon, peanut butter with cheese and peanut butter and jelly with margarine. |
OMG gag. This is the only "weird" post so far. My sympathies, PP. |
I'm not, I'm from lower NY -- I don't know where she picked it up! |
My Irish granny used to make me this too. |
Me again - she called this dish “goody.” |
| My mom's version of mac and cheese was based on the tuna casserole others mentioned but left out the tuna - noodles, canned cream of mushroom, and american cheese. More american cheese in top with cornflakes for crunch. |
|
That's what my dad used to refer to the caramelized bits on the bottom of the pan, used in deglazing. "The goody." Now I know that's called the "fond" but I can never use that. I always think I need to scrape up "the goody." |
Yep. That would be me. Not touching any of it. Now, it used to be hard! But, diagnosed with a dairy allergy. This past Lent was ok, I didn't know what all substituted there were for dairy! In the meantime, I discovered lately ice cream, fake cheddar, fake butter.... So in a way, next Lent I will feel like I am cheating. |
| Orange ruffy.... yuck |
