Covid at UVA

Not when you take into account they (under normal circumstances) have 33,300 people on campus: 25,000 students; 6,149 Administrators and 3,265 academics. Also, they are engaging in the very expensive task of monitoring waste from the dorms to find cases before symptoms. And they have cleared out the international students housing dorm to allow for 1550 beds should they need it for quarantine. Not one student is yet at the UVA hospital, which is also right there. President Ryan recently limited the size of student meet-ups on campus to no more than five people (6 feet apart); students and off-campus students have been told they should not have visitors or invite anyone to Charlottesville. This will be enforced. And all students will be required to wear masks at all times unless they are in their room, eating, or exercising outdoors or in accordance with the guidelines at one of the on-Grounds IM/Rec facilities. Students have even even been told when exercising, they should always keep a mask on hand in case you run into another person. So I don't know what OP is talking about. I think they are doing as best as they can under very trying and often changing circumstances.

Yet my friend just announced on Facebook that she is going down to C-Ville this weekend to visit her freshman.

The visitor thing was something being "urged"

GMU - One, but it takes that person an hour to drive through traffic to get to the lightbulb to change it.

UVa - 30 or 40. One to do the job, the rest to talk about how awesome the old lightbulb was.

The traditional version is:
One. They just hold it up and the world revolves around them.

UVA - 30 or 40. One to do the job, and the rest to talk about how much better they are at changing lightbulbs than other schools. And if any schools are obviously better at changing bulbs, then talk about how much more social and well-balanced UVA students are at changing bulbs.

The VT variant is: Two. One to change it, and the other to explain how they did it just as well as the UVA student.

No. Enforced: From UVA Today "“A suspension for violating these public health norms will be immediate and for the full semester at a minimum, with no opportunity to continue your courses in-person or online," said UVA Dean of Students Allen Groves in a video to the UVA community in August.

Be responsible.

The visitor/travel restriction was walked back and not sent to students, faculty or staff, but they were urged to consider those choices more carefully. There is no travel or visitor restriction. The lowering of max numbers for gathering has been reduced and masks are now mandatory everywhere and outside - those are the only two changes.

This hasn't been updated since 9/10 - says so right at the top of the page.

UVA was teetering on the edge of being in real trouble. Hopefully, the emergency actions they are taking will reverse the trend. They are increased the number of new cases week over week, they have been increasing 25%.

I think they are not out of the woods yet. I'll feel a lot better if the uptick that follows this relative few day lull is less than where they were at on Sept 16-18.

There was a national surge then. Why? Labor Day weekend.

Yes, but in a congregate setting that surge can either be contained or it can be grow rapidly--we don't yet have the data on which way things went at UVA.

I don’t see that and I’m down there. James Ryan and Dean Groves are taking the three initiatives very seriously.

But wait! I thought they had more “character” than students at other schools!

You don't have to "see" it down there, you can read the update to the covid restrictions online, which were updated after the video and excluded the travel changes. Nobody calls him "James" btw, so you definitely aren't involved with the UVA community.

JMU - One. Then they throw a mask-less, Covid-be-damned part to celebrate.

You call him "Jim"? I call him "President Ryan". I called him "Jim" at Harvard. My DD had dinner at Dean Groves' house Monday night. Nice selection of wines. Prove again where the visitor/travel restriction was walked back. Cute attempt to deflect but it didn't work. Show me where visitor/travel restrictions have been walked back.

FYI - We are experiencing a national surge in cases. Considering what the colleges and universities are trying to do, I think UVA has done a fine job of trying to manage a hybrid model. I would not want to be a University President right now. https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/27/health/us-coronavirus-sunday/index.html
