I had a partial hyster at 50 due to horrific period pain. After 7 years the remaining ovary died and I went through menopause. I had to use estrogen (e-ring never Premarin) in order to continue to have sex. Without the estrogren, it wasn't really an option physically.
Added progesterone a few years later when I discovered it worked like valium! and helped with sleep. Looking forward to adding testosterone to help with building muscle and reducing pain. Not to mention restoring the size of my cl*t. |
I'm still chuckling.

I'm on HRT because of very early menopause (age 41). Estrogen is protective of your heart and bones and my doctor wants me to stay on it until a normal menopause age. More recent studies of HRT show that it is safe and doesn't increase your risk if you don't have a family history. I'm on a low dose and also take progesterone as part of the regimen. I feel great.

No. Most don’t. At least not the smart ones. |
Gods what a confusing mess I called my gyn today to get an appointment b/c night sweats and hot flashes. Also I’ve been forgetful did not tie that in until reading this.
Hard to know what to do. |
Not scared, just aware. Just like all changes we go through from starting menses in puberty, to our monthly cycles, to using hormonal birth control, to pregnancy and breastfeeding. All of those have hormonal changes and you learn to deal with the crazy things our bodies do. Sometimes using medication or switching medication or using an alternative method. Peri menopause for many, the cycles get wonky—shorter or longer, heavier or lighter. Everyone is different. I had years of super heavy periods that came every 14-60 days. I could never predict. Now I have super light, just spotting periods every 30-180 days. Some women get night sweats, hot flashes, brain fog, trouble sleeping. |
No doctor should be prescribing estrogen without progesterone. If you have to take estrogen, and you had a partial not complete hysterectomy, then progesterone offsets some of the risk. That was almost malpractice. |
Actually no. If you have a uterus, you need the progesterone. PP had a partial hysterectomy and left the ovaries in tact. That means that the uterus was gone. No progesterone was needed. I’m heading to the pharmacy to pick up my prescription for estrogen AND progesterone. “You have your uterus, so you need progesterone,” is exactly what my doctor said 24 hours ago. Can’t wait to get started. The night sweats are killing me. Interrupted sleep is the worst. |
| I've been taking a vert low dose of Effexor for a few years. Effexor is a SNRI but also works about as well as HT. It has helped tremendously with hot flashes. I still run warm and sometimes overheat, but my sleep is uninterrupted, and I no longer feel like I'm going to spontaneously combust. It doesn't have the same risks as HT. |
What does this help with exactly? |

I am 47 and suddenly stopped getting my period at the beginning of the year and was getting hot flashes multiple times a day. My doc gave me low dose birth control. It has been an amazing gift. Hot flashes and night sweats went away. stomach is flat again (but boobs got bigger), I can sleep again, my brain works, I am nicer. But I can only stay on it until 50.
My doc said the studies about stroke and breast cancer are about people staying on HRT who start later and stay on for years. So now the rec is that you should only stay on it for 5 years or so to avoid developing serious health consequences. |
| Is HRT recommended if you haven't stopped your periods yet but are in perimenopause? I don't have many symptoms except more irregular periods, but I'm 43 and worried about health consequences if I have menopause on the earlier side. |

Almost all posters on this thread seem to get their medical information from USA Today, or FB wellness feeds. Or the pool maybe.
Everyone should go back and carefully read the endocrinologist’s post, with a dictionary if you need it. (As an aside, I wonder how many of the “hell no! types eat meat, consume milk products, keep their BMI under 25, monitor their waist circumference…. I’m going to guess 2% of these responders) |
(except for eating meat) I'm in your 2% - for which you have no evidence, and a lot of snark. |
