WUSA scrubbed all videos of dreadlock hoax and denies Mikea Turner's family friends disclosure?

Mikea shilled their natural hair care products and the family gave her this story.

Uh, except for the little detail that the hair products story ran several months before this incident with the girl.

Meaning one of the following is true:

1) Mikea is a psychic or clairvoyant, with ability to see well into the future

Or

2) the family told Mikea about the girl's "attack" because Mikea was a reporter that they knew and were already previously acquainted with.

I'll leave it to you to figure out. But Occams Razor tells me that Mikea probably isn't a psychic. Otherwise why wouldn't she just pick a winning lottery ticket and be a millionaire so she wouldn't have to work at all?

Didn't Mikea ask for stories first? Then the family had a story for her?

You're ridiculous.

It was her f#cking job to verify facts before misleading the whole country and defame some minors and that school.

This.

Did she talk to other sources? Did she verify the story? That is a journalist’s job.

Otherwise, she’s just writing opinion pieces and should make that clear.

IMO, this is a big problem in journalism right now.

-Not the OP

She DID verify the story. The girl TOLD HER this happened. That's called firsthand sourcing, for those of you who aren't journalists.

She got confirmation from the school that they are looking into it.

She got confirmation from the Fairfax Police Dept that they are indeed investigating.

At this point, she has done her due diligence as a reporter. She can now report that this girl tells her that this happened, and the school and police confirm they are investigating it.

That's the story. An allegation that _____ happened. Here's a soundbite of the victim interview to listen to yourself. Here's the soundbite of the school saying they're investigating it. Here's the police spokesperson saying they're investigating it. That's a story. That's how it works.

The fact that the "victim" lied about the whole thing is something that is impossible for anyone, including the girl's grandparents and the reporter, to know until a thorough investigation is done by police.

Are any of you journalists? Either by training or practicing? I'm guessing no. Because if you were, you'd understand how this can happen.

And for those of you who are not, are you parents? Because if you are I ask you this: what would be your default condition - your very first instinct - if your child came to you with a story about _____ happening to them? A situation where your kid was claiming to be attacked and victimized?

Would your first instinct be to assume your kid is lying about the whole thing?

Or would you believe your kid?

We just had a national argument this spring about whether victims are to be believed or not when they say that 35 years ago a Supreme Court nominee acted like a cad. There were choruses of people on this very site crowing about how women MUST be believed, no matter what. On the heels of the MeToo movement, where WOMEN MUST BE BELIEVED!!!!!

So now, with this case, with hindsight being perfect, now we have the same idiot DCUM people here screaming "the reporter SHOULDN'T have believed her..... until the investigation was over".

Utter nonsense. Sheer, unbridled hypocrisy.

I almost never underestimate the stupidity of the DCUM crowd when it comes to .... well, anything. If there's anything I've learned in the years of observing this forum, it's that the people here who think they're the smartest ones in the room are usually the biggest idiots. So I'm almost never surprised by how dumb people here can be. Almost..... never.

Today is one of those times where I DID overestimate DCUM.

Live and learn. You folks are even stupider than previously thought.

Hi Mikea.

More like Mikea's drunk lover

Savage burn, brah. Savage.

I think he's back, now sober.

I really don’t think there’s a conspiracy going on. But The reporter, the station and the media in general was absolutely wrong for running with the story without verifying the facts. They put this girls face, name and life out there for people to sympathize with. What channel 9 and the reporter need to do is be extremely transparent about what happened and not bury the story deep in the website. I need to be more than a simple little paragraph. Public trust is huge and right now they are deep in a hole, especially the reporter.

They are worried about potential lawsuits, not just from the boys’’ families but from the girl as well. Probably the school too. Not sure if criminal charges are out of the question at this point. That might be a concern too. They’ve made a nice mess for themselves that is for sure.

Criminal charges for what?
The girl admitted she made it up and lied to everybody so what crime was committed by the folks who believed her?

There are much bigger issues to worry about.

The boys (from what I saw) were not named so not sure if they could sue but they should sue the family of the girl for all of it at least for attorney fees and pain/suffering.

The 12 year old is not the one who put this out there on the news. She talked to her good family friend the reporter but ultimately the reporter is the one responsible for blasting her face and her story all over the nation if not all over the world.

The reporter's hair is straightened with a relaxer...she doesn't even rock natural hair.
I'm confused.

You're definitely confused. Black hair 101: you can wear your hair straightened without a relaxer. Those of us with unrelaxed (i.e., "natural") hair can wear it straightened or in natural styles. If you scroll down on the reporter's Twitter feed, there's a picture of her with her hair in a natural style.

Its probably Keratin, not relaxer.

There is a huge difference between natural hair care and unkept hair. That poor child's hair is a disaster. Dreads require a lot of maintenance and it didn't look like the family was doing it at all. I'm surprised the school allowed it or they didn't want trouble. She probably wanted it changed, adults said no. She was probably teased about it. She probably cut it and then got in trouble and then blamed the boys as her out not to get in trouble. Then, the family escalated it and she didn't know how to get out of it and kept with the story. Lots of kids do that but the difference is it doesn't escalate to slander to three innocent boys on the media. She should be expelled from the school. She broke their behavior code.

Let's try to stop this insanity before it becomes an epidemic of lies and false reports

The girl deserved to be expelled, no doubt about that.

And there’s irrefutable proof the reporter knew it was a lie? What evidence/testimony confirms this?

Please don't play dumb.

Previous PP said the reporter was RESPONSIBLE for it, and she is. It's her job to ensure she reports facts, not falsehoods.
