If she was crying and saying "I'm a widow! But I was a beauty queen in high school! I was on honor role! I don't deserve to be here!" no one would care. Many people would feel sorry for her. And after she sobered up, she will definitely be remorseful for making an ass of herself on top of the dui. I hope she will be remorseful about drinking and driving...my experience with drunkards is that she will probably be very remorseful for this when she sobers, but not enough to keep herself from doing it again.

She needs jail time, treatment, and loss of driving privileges.

No, it couldn't. Most people I know don't drive drunk and high. I certainly don't. She has no excuse - a) call the boyfriend (if you're birthday for heaven's sake), b) call a taxi, c) ride home with a friend, or better yet d) call an uber.
