Wow. If you wrote a book about your life I would read it. If Hollywood made a movie about your life I would watch it. |
Literally everything said on this thread is about poor whites, with the references to small towns and rural areas. In other words, a white skin isn't tantamount to privilege. Maybe another thing rich people need to learn is that poor people are white people too

I used my first bonus check when I finally got a really good job to fix my teeth after YEARS of neglect. I had several root canals, teeth extracted, crowns, etc. I got braces.
Also, when I first moved away to go to school at age 17, I was always embarrassed/scared to use certain words because while I knew a lot of "big" words (from books) I didn't know how to pronounce them (this was pre-internet) because nobody I knew used them. |
This. Rich people don't know that poor people don't have dental. I did not go to the dentist until high school when I had several cavities and needed a root canal. My mom's boss bought her dentures and she paid him back slowly. Also, I could not pronounce certain words in college because my poor parents said them incorrectly my whole life. |

Government cheese
Rich people don't understand that term. |

I am a nanny. My first “nanny” job was in a rural area as a sort of live-in (part-time help in exchange for room and board). The family I worked with then had 5 kids and live in rural upstate new york and have always been close to the wire. Kids are currently 18, 16, 13, 10 and 9. Recent story that mom shared with me:
The pipe from the woodstove they use to heat their house all winter vents the heat near the roof. Apparently, there was some insulation too close to it that caught fire. Dad was out of town. Mom was recovering from surgery and bedridden. When the smoke alarms went off, the 18yo boy called 911 and got mom, youngest 3 kids and their pets to safety in the barn. The 16yo boy got their fire extinguisher and went out a window and onto the roof, where he punched a hole with the extinguisher and sprayed into the crawlspace where the fire was spreading, and repeated a few times until the fire was out. By the time the fire department had arrived, there was nothing left for them to do. I comparw that kind of awareness and responsibility and self-efficacy to the wealthy kids I nanny for now and just shake my head. |
Bless you. And them. |
I'm UMC from a dirt poor background. I have benefited from theme meritocracy. |
Meritocracy exists in certain fields. Particularly, those that focus on results rather than relationships. In general STEM is a meritocracy. |
| Perhaps the next thread could be about people who were born poor and became rich (or financially comfortable). Isn't that significantly more important than making fun of others and their perceived lack of knowledge and experience? |

“Rich people don't know that meritocracy is a myth. ”

There is! Dr. Ruby Payne has a Hidden Rules for Social Classes. Take a look at these two very interesting links. Here is a questionnaire about social class. http://www.asanet.org/sites/default/files/savvy/introtosociology/Documents/Hidden%20Rules%20of%20Social%20Class.htm Here is a link to a SHRM quick bite on the differences between the classes. https://www.shrm.org/hr-today/news/hr-magazine/Pages/0910tylerc.aspx Dr. Payne has a really cool chart in her Framework book that is the basis of the short bit from SHRM. |
I think this is what made me realize the difference between my UMC family and my friend's poor family when I was a kid. We went to 7-11 with her mom who bought a 4-pack of TP, loaf of bread, and pack of american cheese. I thought you only bought these things in giant multi packs at Price Club, not with a pile of ones and change at 7-11. I was 7 or 8 at the time and thought 7-11 was strictly for Slurpees and garbage pail kids (and was probably bitter we weren't getting those things too). |
Yes!! This is my DH too. He is rule-bound, just like his parents. Not practical. Does not know how to build community to share tasks, just calls a service for everything. Believes corporate America. Are we married to the same guy? oh and poor people are bad. Military people are good. Makes me a little sick actually.
