It's obvious you don't get around much if you think SFS is internationally known. |
The Times (a London daily newspaper) headline about SFS: “The most elite school in the world (no, it’s not Eton)”. Just to be fair and balanced, I googled GDS and MoCo schools on the Times website. Nothing. This debate doesn’t even concern me, but it was so dumb and counterintuitive that I couldn’t resist checking go on give me more alternative facts

Tatler Hong Kong edition: Where do celebrity kids go to school? (A global list, mentioning, you guessed it, Sidwell).
Not to mention serious educational supplements and rankings I could do this whole day, just for funsies and because I need a distraction while counting the hours to impeachment |
Link? |
LOL. A global ranking lists Tsinghua University, University of Singapore or the Ohio State University, do you think these are internationally known Universities? |
|
I’ve had the same experience. We were moving to DC from a large global capital and all the prep school parents were asking if we would go to Sidwell. It surprised me but there it is. Fairly or unfairly, Sidwell, NCS and STA are the “name” schools.
This debate to me is really like when someone insists that UPenn is the same as Harvard. Even if it were, no one would quite buy it fairly or unfairly because Harvard has the reputation and name recognition. It’s a great school but the question was about whether one was delusional to think SFS had a name recognition internationally. In my experience it does, and much more than I had expected. |
In 2012 the school "Probably has the most powerful PARENT body in the world", not academics but parent body because Obama was president at the time and Biden was vice-president. Wow!!! |
It is a gossipy London magazine’s edition from Hong Kong that definitely does not list these Unis. The point was that it captures the zeitgeist and that Sidwell is internationally known. I’ve no idea what global ranking you are reading or why you feel the need to claim no one abroad knows what Sidwell is. It’s silly and pointless. |
There is a lot more than that about the academics etc. behind the paywall. It is however besides the point. The question was does Sidwell have national and international name recognition? Moreover, does it have the name recognition more than GDS and MoCo schools? The answer is Yes and Yes. I think there are many reasons, but even if you think it’s the Obama effect, it’s still yes and yes. |
Seriously. The top private schools in the country are not in DC. When people talk about the top private schools, they're not thinking of Sidwell, GDS etc.. Maybe after the top 20 |
| such a stupid debate. |
|
Sidwell is consistently in the top, even with the boarding schools in the mix. So is TJ. GDS, if ranked, ranks at least a few spots below. Every time. I don’t mean to beat up GDS or MoCo, which I’m sure are great schools, but it’s really annoying to be quite so dishonest about which schools are known outside of DC.
I asked myself why do I even care to engage in this debate? Especially when it’s so silly and obvious? The era of alternative facts is drawing to an end, so, while this debate is not a concern for me, I’m very keen on honesty in all things as we count down to the impeachment and criminal charges. Just be fact-based, fair and honest |
Ditto for the stupid boards that claimed and bullied other parents as lazy mothers page after page that transmission rate in DC was low and that we wouldn’t see the case load we see today. Despite showing the facts, explaining the doubling times, people still claimed what they claimed. DCUM should come with the Twitter type warning that these claims have not been proven
