They all speak Spanish. They are all Hispanic. Confusing I know. It is what it is.

Sounds like OP want them to say, "Okay, we admit it, we are not Spanish (which would make us Europeans and part of the white race), we are just lowly Mexicans, far beneath you, superior white one in class and status." Not sure why this is a big deal to her but I sure as hell am happy you are not my kid's teacher.

Maybe you know that, but these kids don't know that.

Spanish people are Caucasian and hott. Everybody hedges toward hott. Hence.. "North Potomac" not Gaithersburg . It's human nature.

The actual Spanish -people from Spain- are racist enough against Central and South Americans; we do t have to pile on. Just let them use a term they all understand. They are not misrepresenting themselves; they could give a shit about Spain. They live in DC and they speak Spanish at home. Not complicated.

Thank you. This sums it up.

Most people from Spanish speaking countries refer to themselves as Mexican, Honduran, Salvadoran, Peruvian, etc. They'll tell you that white/Asian/black/whatever Americans are the ones who lump them together as latinos or hispanics. It's our label, not their label.

Not true. I work with a lot of immigrants and while they will identify individually as coming from a certain country, when they refer to their ethnic group they say Spanish. When it's on paper, obviously, they check Hispanic. I figure it must be like saying Black v African American.

No they are a mix too.
Some members of the same family are lighter/darker than others.

But the truth lies in what Spanish they speak.... And it's usually not the King's.

This.

Spaniards are white Europeans. They can have blond hair and blue eyes, or any other hair/eye color combo possible, and have fair to slightly olive skin.

"Spanish" (their term) are a mix of various mestizo and mesoamerican bloodlines from Aztec, Mayan and Inca origins. They are not Europeans, and almost universally have dark skin, black hair and brown eyes. There is almost no variation from this.

South Americans are a broader mix of European and Incan and other aboriginal bloodlines. Chileans, Argentines, Cubans and Columbians often look very much like Spaniards, especially in higher socioeconomic strata.

The word "mestizo" means mixed European and indigenous ancestry. Around 80% of both Central Americans and Mexicans are mestizo. They are as European as many "white" people.

These kids are not claiming a bloodline, you nutcases. They are saying their families speak Spanish, which is a unifying characteristic. Get a grip.

I am a substitute teacher -primarily middle and high school, and I've noticed that kids from Mexico and South America call themselves Spanish. Yesterday while subbing I overheard a discussion where kids (all Hispanic) were shocked to find out that one of their classmates was half "Spanish". The girl actually said that her mom was white and her dad was from Guatemala, but to them that counts as Spanish. Don't these kids know that Spain is in Europe? Why don't they just refer to themselves as Hispanic, Latino, or their individual nationality? White Americans don't go around calling themselves English.

You may want to spend some more time speaking with THEM.

You sound like the typical clueless American. Best treatment is not DCUM, it's travel and talking to people you want to understand.
