can we talk about school lunches - let's make a list!

My two take a peanut butter sandwich nearly every single day- with a fruit, vegetable, and another side (wheat crackers, sesame sticks, whatever I have on hand). You guys have some picky kids.

Omg that’s so disgusting! I feel bad for your kids!

Whut? Kids love this. Are you kidding?? We have tried so many frozen foods from Costco and TJs during the pandemic and a lot of the foods have been a hit with the kids.

And it is junk food and feeding your kids this crap is partly why we have an obesity epidemic. Even if they are normal weight now, they grow up thinking this is the kind of food you should eat for lunch and continue to do so as an adult and end up overweight

My 12 y old who is extremely fruit averse but otherwise adventurous eater likes:
Cold sesame noodles (you can buy at Whole Foods)
Pasta salad
Hard boiled eggs with salt and pepper
Minestrone soup
Chili
The prepared peppered salmon in a vacuum sealed thing that you can get at Whole Foods
Turkey sandwiches on sourdough or baguette or roll, light on Mayo bc it gets soggy

She is old enough to make her own lunches and enjoys cooking. We haven’t all gotten up in time to make that work, but maybe this year!

Ha, you are right! This is what I grew up on as an Indian American vegetarian. I still love obj and could easily eat it every day! I wish peanuts were safe for school, but I understand why they’re not.

Sandwich with fruit & veg and a snack
Hot dog or corn dog with fruit & veg and a snack
Chicken with fruit & veg and a snack
Sliders with fruit & veg and a snack
Pizza or pizza rolls with fruit & veg and a snack
Mac n cheese or pasta with fruit & veg and a snack
Salad with grilled chicken with bread or crackers and yogurt or string cheese maybe a cookie or candy
Cereal with milk with fruit & veg
Waffles with Nutella with fruit & veg
Veggie burger with fruit & veg and a snack
Mini tacos (from Trader Joe's frozen section) with fruit & veg and a snack
I always send a milk too.

Did it make you feel better to type out "fruit & veg and a snack" ten times?

It sure didn't help anyone figure out new lunch ideas.

Seriously. I don't see how many of these other options are healthier. Lunchables? Cereal bars? Come on.

+1. Lunchables are gross. Cereal bars are candy. Might as well eat a Snickers bar.

My kid doesn't like sandwiches or leftovers so he gets a "homemade lunchable" in a bento-style box every day:

Deli meat roll-ups (turkey, ham, or salami)
Cheese stick or cheese cubes
A fruit or two (grapes, clementine, strawberries, apple slices, cherries)
A veggie or two (sugar snap peas, snow peas, carrot sticks)
Something pickled (olives or cornichon pickles)

I copy and pasted it when I wrote it several years ago. My kid is in high school now. Sorry you didn’t find it helpful. If I hadn’t mentioned that my kid was getting veggies in his lunch I would have been criticized by some other happy dcum mom for depriving my kid of nutritious food. Oh well. Good luck, lunch moms!

OPs child can take peanut butter to school (per the OP) and many schools are ok with peanut butter. It is like parents want extra work or to make things extra difficult. Packing lunch shouldn’t be hard. Sandwich, fruit, vegetable. Done.

Soy eggs (basically deviled eggs soaked overnight in sugar/soy sauce/spice)
Cold noodle salad with shredded carrots/scallions, easy to make big portion and then put into a small tupperware
Ham-and-cheese roll-ups without bread, side of mustard
Black bean/avocado/corn salad (again easy to make big batch and portion through week)

I like the compartmented bento boxes because it encourages me to pack different things in a single lunch. And d’or a picky kid it keeps items separate and not touching.

Little compartments I put:
Fruit
Babybel or chunks of cheddar
Hummus in a little container
Carrot sticks
Mini peppers or bell pepper strips
HB egg sprinkled with furikake
Small dessert like a choc covered marshmallow or nut free trail mix. Today was a small slice of pie.
Lightly steamed broccoli

In the larger compartment I put a main:
Cheese and pickle sandwich
Fried rice
Vegetable soba noodles
Sun butter and jelly sandwich
Fried mandu
Pizza

It’s also fun to use the bento boxes to put all appetizer foods in, like:
Stuffed grape leaves
Cheeses
Crackers
Cut up vegetables
Fruit
Dip

Seriously -- is this not a thing?

There’s places that banned peanuts.
My kids are beyond elementary and I’m still angry about it.
