You probably don't want to go down that road considering how rare stranger abduction actually is. In fact, taking this line/tone really does make you look like a bit of a fool.

I'm curious: How do you function? You seem like you're afraid of your own shadow. Drugs, predators everywhere... I bet you're fearful of terrorists, too. Are you being medicated? You should be.

Umm... I'm gonna need to see some data on taking specific lines of thinking and tone. Think you could that for me and do some analysis? Thanks.

Umm... I'm gonna need to see some data on medication and how that might alliveate anxiety. Really looking forward to an extremely wordy and insightful response. Leave nothing out. Please take up the rest of the thread if possible. We are breathlessly awaiting all of your thoughts.
Ps-I have kid in rehearsal right now, so I know what my kid is doing. What exactly is yours up to?

There is actually a guy on arlnow.com saying how we just don't trust people nowadays and how horrible a big deal is being made of this by the Police. He actually said "the guy pulled over and asked if the kid needed a ride. the kid said 'no' and he drove off so he couldn't have meant harm." WTF?!?!!!

Would your husband drive up to a kid he didn't know at 8am in the morning and ask the kid unknown to him if he needed a ride?!?!!!

Have you taught your children never to accept ride from a stranger?

At least this kid knew what to do.

I'm gonna need to see some data on everything you just wrote. See I'm an American and I don't just believe what the man is telling me. I like to think big.

So are you saying, that there are no drugs at Kenmore, Swanson, TJ? Honest question.
Or is it so much more widespread/accepted at WMS? What is the difference that makes it so acceptable ?

Anonymous wrote:Without getting into the bickering back and forth, here are a few points:

- The drug problem at YHS and WMS is bad. If you don't think so you are fooling yourself. Ask kids who are at either school -- if they are honest and aware they will tell you drug use is prevalent. It also is an unneeded social pressure that many of these kids feel.

- The drug dog tours after school are useless. My child, a YHS student, when she heard about this said "most kids don't even use their lockers. And they certainly aren't going to leave drugs in a locker overnight. Especially now that the use of drug sniffing dogs has been announced." I think this is pretty obvious and makes me believe this is just a way for APS to say "see -- no drugs -- no problem here."

- The schools can play a role in fighting the drug problem, but parents have to take the lead. The casual attitude about drugs/alcohol/sex that you see from the average N. Arlington parent is shocking. Until more parents change their attitude and become more actively involved in their kids' lives, the problem will not get better. Yes, a lot of 2 working parent households in demanding careers, but you have to make parenting your number one job. I'm not sure I agree with these "police state" comments in this thread. Best thing you can do is develop an open, honest relationship with your kids. You want them talking to you, especially when sh!t gets real, not afraid of you. I'm not saying be soft -- make sure they understand that you have zero tolerance for certain things. But your kids need to know that you know they are going to screw up sometimes, and you are there to support them when they do. Parenting isn't easy -- the vast majority of us need to put more effort into it.

Add to that long hours at the office and kids with money to burn.

Anoth NP here. What this drug dog issue has taught me is that I should be really glad we are not zoned for Williamsburg.

Uh no. I didn't comment on that ridiculous thread. Did you read that forum? I'm embarrassed for all
Of those people, and genuinely worried for their children. Their kids might turn out fine, despite them.

We are zoned for Swanson, but I am under no illusion it's not a problem all over APS Ms/HS. A lot of kids from Swanson and WMS hang out after school. For whatever we reason, I heard it is a larger problem in the WMS/YHS pyramid. I am guessing demographics. When I was kid growing up in Gairfax County, Langley used to be the drug HS. Similar demographic of wealthy parents checked out, kids with free time alone and the "my kid would never do it he/she is an angel" mentality.
