I cannot stand our gentle labrador retriever

Horrible comment, PP.

OP, just find it a good home. I am a dog lover and cannot understand people like you, but at least you're honest about it. I feel so sorry for the poor dog. The dog deserves better. Geez.

Try to regime the dog OP. Maybe on a listserv or contact a local rescue group and ask them for advice. They may know where you could post to find a good home.

Living on land with a large dog is different from living in a condo.

eh, I don't know about that. My DH is not a big fan of our lab but still walks and feeds him and when DH comes home the dog goes crazy with excitement to see him.

OP, you really should look into rehoming the dog if the lifestyle suggestions (roomba, grooming, etc) in this thread don't work out for you. I'm not saying take the dog to the humane society or surrender him to a rescue, I'm saying look for a specific family that is able and willing to provide a better life for the dog.

Then we had a child, the German shepherd died and we moved to DC.

Now we live in a condo and it is a pain in the neck to walk the dog three times a day, plus to clean the rugs. I absolutely hate it that my clothes are full of dog hair. It is so humiliating. Whenever I work out on a yoga mat and get close to the rug, I find the hair so disgusting I almost throw up.

Am I unreasonable to resent having to take care of the dog? I often have a bad conscience about this, because otherwise she is the perfect dog: gentle, calm, child-friendly, unassuming and undemanding. But I have zero bond with her and neither does our daughter. My husband cares for her, but he works out-of-state and is hardly at home. My daughter and I fly a lot to him, so then we have to arrange for dog care, sometimes for weeks on end.

I secretly count the years until the dog dies. Then I feel bad about it because she is a truly wonderful dog and it is not her fault that she sheds hair.

Sorry, I just wanted to vent. I realize that this forum is for dog-lovers, not dog-haters...

If the DH is in a permanent job elsewhere why doesn't OP , the child, the dog live there? If OP and child go there for weeks I assume OP isn't working. The child I think I read is 4. The dog only gets to pee 3 times a day? Most people like a sweet gentle kindly older lab. Well I did know some who disliked them but they were from different cultures.

OP-you need to work out your living situation since this labbie isn't your real problem.

OP- we got a dog for our DS (he takes zero interest in her) so I got stuck with everything. I am not a dog person, hate the work and the mess, and yes, realize it was poor decision making on our part.

Dumb dog got sick and vet told me we might lose her. I cried and cried. She's still with us- silly girl grew on me and will be with us forever.

You're an asshole OP.

Wow, people are nuts.

OP, you are doing your job --- you recognize that taking care of the dog is an obligation and even though you don't like the dog you do it. Personally, I love my dog a TON, so I can't relate, but I related to doing your job and fulfilling your responsibilities. Good for you. Hope the Roomba works out.

I hope you contact the person who posted their email.

You sound like a truly awful person.

And hire a dog walker, groomer... and a cleaning lady. DH seems to be making enough money. OP needs a break.

First, I want to say PLEASE get a Roomba. You will thank DCUM forever.

Second, your dog must sense your and your DD's apathy or antipathy towards it. It may be better off re-homed.

I don't think it's kind for PPs to say they cannot stand OP. She clearly has a rescue, and has tried, and it's not working for her. The people to "can't stand" are those who don't do anything about it and let the dog stay neglected. Now OP said she just wanted "to vent" but I'm hoping that she's venting as a first step to realizing that she needs to either change her mind or re-home the dog. So let's help her do that!

Op can't stand her sweet dog because of fur.

We can't stand her because she's an evil bitch who wants to get rid of a sweet senior dog.

If she's allowed to not be able to stand her dog we sure as hell are allowed to despise her too.

Exactly. Dogs are much nicer than people. If I had to save OP or her dog, I would save the dog.

OP - any updates? Have you tried any of the suggestions in this thread? Has it gotten any better?
