Scuffle at Yorktown HS today

Nope I don't agree. I think that's one of those ideas that white parents like to believe and make themselves feel better with. My observation is the kids self-segregate and tend to simply ignore and tolerate the presence of kids who are different from them. This is a much different thing than tolerance and acceptance.

New poster who does agree. My 3 DC went to/attend Science Focus, Swanson and WL and have always had very racially and economically diverse groups of friends. It has continued in college as well. That IS normal to them and as their parent, I am thrilled.

Swanson has a lower FARMS percentage than Yorktown and ASF isn't exactly teeming with poor kids, either.

You are using present tense . Two of my DC are now in college and the third is a senior in high school. Demographics may have changed since my DC attended those schools.

It was. Demographics have changed such that it no longer reflects the county's overall demographics. But it is still more diverse than most other north Arlington schools.

I've seen it grow more diverse. My 3 kids, caucasians, are ethnic minorities in their classrooms. There is still a good deal of economic diversity from some of the AFH apartment complexes in the ASF/Key zone. There is also a very large population of International State Dept./world bank families--often resulting in high student turnover. In fact, with most of the Jamestown team students pulling out to attend the new Discovery elem. last year and growth/more children in some of the housing units in-zone there is more economic diversity now. Take a look at the zone map which includes the YH island they use to try to break up the YHS whiteness. I think the FARMs is around 22%.

Uh, no. Kids is schools with a balanced mix of races end up self segregating for anything social, like lunch, after school, etc.

My kids are in a majority-minority school in south Arlington and their friends are a total mix. It has always been that way to them. Maybe the only group that peels off is at the older grades the A-A boys all go out to play basketball together after school. But friends-wise, every birthday party I've ever taken them to has been like the United Nations.
