Most of the people I know who are covered in brands and bling don't make too much more than I do (and we're pretty solidly middle class).

Its AMAZING how not-show-offy truly rich people actually are. You know they are rich because of all their other expenses such as property in an expensive neighborhood; multiple international trips abroad; cotillion etc.

+1

Anyone who claims to be the "millionaire next door" clearly is not. Rich people don't talk about money, or act like pompous asses - it is the posers that do that. RUN!

This is true.

The truly rich families I know are the nicest most polite people and low key people you'd ever meet. They drive old Subarus and wear 10 year old perfectly kept Ann Taylor sheath dresses. They never talk about money except when they're gushing about a cheap bargain they've found. Presents for their kids are simple and educational. The truly rich will never give their 5 year old an ipad for his birthday. Their 12 year old daughter will wear their nieces hand me downs and her mother's well kept old leather boots. They are super thrifty.

However, appearance wise they also do NOT dress sloppy. They will look put together and will wear high quality stuff. Only it won't have a tory burch logo all over it.

Just curious, how rich is "truly rich" in your opinion?

Hmmm...

I'm guessing able to come up with 30 million in less than a week, without selling property.

Holy crap! That is rich rich. Very unusual for DC.

So here's a similar question, but how much is "Tory Burch"-girl rich, in people's opinions?

Makes $75k, which she blows on mani/peds, lunches, lattes. Her parents help her with her car payment and condo building's maintenance fee.

$75K?! You're being very generous to the Tory Burch wearing crowd. In this area, I'd say she makes $50K, is obsessed with The Bachelor, slams back orange crushes at happy hour in Clarendon, and thinks attending the annual sham fundraisers (Walk This Way / Gold Cup) make her an area A-lister.

At $50k, she'd be reduced to being a sugar baby to some DC developer.

I thought that was implied.

Bullshit.

Absolutely true. Not bullshit.

Seriously, +1 on the Norstrom appointment if you don't know where to start. And please don't highlight your hair.

You need to check out the thread on putting your kids before your marriage. You sound like you need to a makeover and a reality check.

How? DH is at work while we are at the playground and the pool. Your reply made me laugh. I said I look like this most days. Certainly I shower and wear nicer clothes if we are going out.

Me again! One more thing I thought of later. If DH isn't at work during the day or on the weekend he is joining us at the pool or doing something hands-on with the kids. We are an active family and we like to have fun. If anyone sees us during our regular day to day life we don't stand out one bit.

PP you don't need to defend yourself to trolls. That person knows nothing about your marriage (since, you know, that wasn't even something you brought up, nor needed to for the point you were making) and is probably upset at their own shortcomings. Sounds like you're a better parent than many, and by no means does it seem like you "put your kids before your marriage". People are ridiculous.
