First size 16 COVER MODEL of Sports Illustrated!

2 of the 3 cover models were on just on The Today Show. The size 16 one is much larger than a standard department store 16.

I'm a straight woman and find this revolting. I have an obese son, who struggles with thyroid issues as well as my family's endocrine issues. I know the pain and health issues he's suffered over the years due to his obesity. It should not be celebrated.

I agree.

Size 16 is not a healthy weight.

With the obesity epidemic in this country, we should not be normalizing a size 16 as a desireable body.

But we've been normalizing and celebrating size 00 for years. Why is it only disgusting and pandering only on one side of the BMI scale?

A lot of suffering comes from trying to fit an unrealistic (and equally unhealthy) body "ideal".

Then use a size six to size ten model.

This lady is at an unhealthy size. We have an obesity epidemic in this country, not a too thin epidemic.

Eating disorders are in fact a problem in this country.

yes, too much eating

Not sure why you are such a bitch but you must be aware that there are sadly many many girls starving themselves to death or binging and purging.

And if ED counselors really cared about these girls, they would refer to a psychiatrist who specializes in OCD. But without sick patients, these ED counselors have no business, no media attention, nothing.

NP. Yep, I'm sure ED counselors could care less about the girls they work with, it's just a conspiracy.

I think YOU need a psychiatrist. Urgently.

I think they care, but are so caught up in their politics that they refuse to see the truth re: EDs. If the choice is to medicate a patient with a drug for OCD and it stops the cycle of starvation and/or binge/purging, why would you NOT do it? The woman I spoke of (the activist) said "because if she goes off the medication, the ED will start again". Well, that's how OCD works, usually, which is why it's combined often with behavioral modification. Without the meds, the 'voice' of the ED shuts down the brain to the behavior mod therapy. Calming that voice with a drug such as Zoloft, allows the therapy to be much more effective.

Sorry, as someone who had an ED and successfully recovered without the use of drugs, I am sick and tired of your pseudo-concerned conspiracy theory bullshit.

Good for you. Some, however, die. And it's those individuals I am concerned about.

I'm glad you feel, the government, among others is a conspiracy theorist:

Conclusions:

OCD occurs frequently in patients with anorexia, and successful treatment requires that both conditions be specifically identified and managed. Athletic trainers may be the first to recognize key signs and symptoms of this illness; by referring the individual for psychiatric evaluation, they can be instrumental in helping the patient to obtain appropriate treatment.

It is a well-known medical fact that there is a relationship between EDs and OCD. Your viciousness and denial of such, kind of proves my point.

If you think EDs are just a brain glitch that can be cured with medication you're sadly mistaken. I'm a therapist and work with clients with many issues, including eating disorders and OCD. You're not incorrect to mention that there are aspects of disordered eating which resemble OCD, however it's really not that simple. There are many additional factors in play for many (if not most) ED clients. This includes family dynamics and the wider culture that sends messages to women that thinness is revered above health and self-acceptance..

For a therapist, you don't read nor listen well. Did you miss the part about concurrent therapy including CBT? People waste a lot of time in talk therapy and get nowhere - though it's lucrative for the therapist.

This whole conversation is stupid. She is getting paid large sums of money to look like what she does so those people who don't like can look the fuck away and those who do, enjoy.

Actually, the only thing that bothers me about this cover -- and interior shots -- is the glorification of tanning.

SI should be acting more responsibly on this issue. Skin cancer is for real.

So are genetics and vitamin D deficiency - huge contributors to the deadlier form of skin cancer.

Squamous and basal cell are treatable annoyances in comparison.

I would never encourage my daughter whether she was size 4 or size 14 to wear a bikini- but if she wanted to then I would feel glad she felt proud of her body. What I would encourage is a healthly lifestyle and acceptance of and pride in one's body for reasons other than how it looks to others in a bikini. I would also encourage her to ignore people like you.

Her giant body makes her head look small. If it wasn't for her big hair , her head would look too small to control her enormous body. Like it wouldn't be able to generate strong enough electric signals to make it all the way to her feet and outer skin layers.

SI sales are way down and the bathing suit issue is what keeps them alive but even the past years it has not been the that popular so they had to do something to attract attention.
