So what do you do for childcare if you have to be available at a moment's notice? |
| This is an interesting thread. Husband and I are both in our mid-30s. I'm self-employed, work outside of the home in professional job. Income fluctuates month to month, year to year but average around $275-$300K annual pre-tax. Mostly work 9am to 5pm, but have plenty of evening and weekend work when contracts call for it. Other times I get to have days off here and there (without pay of course) when the work load is slow. Plenty of amazing perks and crappy drawbacks of owning a business. Husband is employed full time, makes around $270K plus a substantial (over $50K) annual bonus. Feel very fortunate to be in our financial and employment situations, especially with the costs of a home, childcare, etc... in DC. |

I'm a fed, make about 115k. This thread makes me feel poor! Hahaha.
DH makes about the same, a little more. I have very flexible hours, every other Friday off. I work roughly 9-5 and then make up some hours here and there at home. Telework two days a week. |

I work for a non-profit, and I make 70K. I can work from home whenever I want/need to, and I do it about 3 times a week. I get 5 weeks of vacation a year + the week of Xmas off. I was allowed to move away from the DC area but still keep my position and pay, so, my money now goes much further! I definitely took a hit for working for a non-profit, but I wouldn't trade it as I don't feel any stress or pressure from my boss if I have to miss. I have two kids that are both under 3.

| I work 10am-5pm, four days a week. Salary is $88K based on reduced schedule. Travel about four times a year 2-5 days each and a few late evenings for client events, maybe 1-2 times a month. DH makes about double what I make working for himself. I rarely work at home (since DH uses the home office) but will a few times a year if needed. My company doesn't care if I switch my day off so I usually just do that if I need to be at home for some reason. Rarely have to log in after hours though I do check emails. Only work two weekends a month (attending conferences). |
Why don't you? (No snark, curious.) |
!!!! We both love what we do, but make under 200k combined. And work a lot. |
What association! Ha..I know you probably don't want to share on a forum, but I am looking to change jobs ( work for an association), and one of my goals is to find a culture of an association that is like this ( more balanced). |

I have a very flexible job ... DD is just about a year and am pregnant with #2. I don't make a ton of money (only $63K a year) but work 4 days a week from home and 1 day in the office.
Job is very flexible so I can drop off DD to daycare around 8:30 and pick up around 4:45ish. During the day while working I can also get dinner made, clean up around the house and throw laundry in. Plus I have time to work out and get groceries if needed. I seriously have no idea how people work out of the house and can get everything done at home and have kids. Stuff around the house/cooking/laundry and most kid stuff falls on me. DH is big law (makes around $250K) and works long hours but I knew all of this going in. |
It doesn't all get done if you don't make enough to outsource. I have periods of anxiety when things at home, kids' school, and work are exceedingly busy. Our house is cluttered; bathrooms are cleaned weekly and dishes are done, but full cleaning doesn't happen until someone is coming over. |

I run operations for a nonprofit and make 95k. I technically work full-time but I'm at home every Friday and I don't punch a clock so as long as I get done what needs to be done, I generally don't work much on that day. I have total flexibility because my boss works for 100% remotely. Most days I get in around 930 and leave around 430. But at least once a week I get in later or leave earlier. I'm very good at my job and basically keep the place running, so I have no concerns about taking advantage of flexibility. I have two young children who are four and two.
My husband works for a private company and his total comp is about 100 K. He has great benefits which we need bc my company doesn't have any. I have the added benefit of a significant inheritance so we have no mortgage or retirement concerns. The situation is pretty much ideal for us right now and I do not take it for granted. |

34 yo, 110k fed with a very flexible job, and off every other Monday. Our one kiddo is less than a year old.
Is it the most stimulating job? No...but with a kid so young, things are still a little cray cray and I appreciate that my situation is so family friendly. I've never checked email on a weekend or after I walk out the door for the day. I've almost never worked late and have no reason to come in on a weekend or travel. That's the biggest perk to me. When I'm home, I'm home. They get all of me. |
WOW!! |
Out of curiosity, how large is your nonprofit? In terms of staff size, or revenue? I am about to transition into a similar role at my nonprofit (I, too, keep the place running) but I'm fairly confident they won't pay me anywhere close to 95k at this point. Just curious. |
About 1 million in revenue. It's a small staff of five with a number of independent contractors doing things like evaluation. I'm actually probably somewhat overpaid, for the industry, but I left a much higher paying job and my boss really wants to keep me. I realize I'm lucky in a number of ways. |
